Nearly two months after the release of NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139, the remaster of the original NieR has sold over one million copies. The original NieR, released back in 2010, only managed to achieve 500,000 sales within its lifetime.

When NieR first released in 2010, it didn’t gain that much traction. It was a niche title, but it was beloved for its gripping tale inspired by Yoko Taro’s other franchise, Drakengard, which came before it. It wasn’t until NieR: Automata released in 2017 that the series gained a significant following due to reasons such as PlatinumGames revamping the game’s combat system. From there, Japan’s version of NieR Replicant got remastered into NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139. The original NieR Replicant was released in Japan with the protagonist and Yonah being brother and sister respectively. Meanwhile, the west got NieR Gestalt, which had a father protagonist and Yonah as the daughter.

Today, the official NieR Twitter account tweeted that not only did NieR Replicant pass one million sales, its sequel NieR: Automata has accumulated over six million sales through digital and physical releases combined. This is more than double the sales that the original NieR achieved in its lifetime of 11 years. Having NieR Replicant overtake the sales of its original version in only two months is very impressive, with the growing popularity of the series being a key contributing factor to the success of NieR Replicant.

NieR Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 has significant changes that separate it from the original NieR. One of the most notable is the reworked combat, in which both weapons and magic can be used at the same time, similarly to how the pods in NieR: Automata can be fired alongside weapons. There’s also a new encounterable boss in the game, alongside a whole new story route that links together both NieR Replicant and NieR: Automata.

The more the NieR series grows, the higher the chance becomes that more games could be made for the series, including a potential sequel. But the success of NieR Replicant also leaves open the possibility for Yoko Taro’s older series to be remade, namely the Drakengard franchise. Yoko Taro has previously gone on record saying that he would do a Drakengard remaster collection if he got the funds for it. There’s no telling for sure if Drakengard will get the same treatment as NieR Replicant, but the door is very much open for it, especially with more players learning of how NieR came to be from Drakengard. Right now, anything’s possible for the NieR series, be it a sequel or remaster.
