Night Stalker: What Happened To Investigator Frank Salerno

By 1985, Frank Salerno was already somewhat of a Los Angeles legend. Nearly a decade prior, the detective led the investigation for the Hillside Strangler, who was actually revealed to be two different people – cousins Angelo Buono Jr. and Kenneth Bianchi. In Night Stalker, Salerno appears calm and collected during interviews, whereas his former partner Gil Carrillo is a little more animated, certainly when recalling the moment that he was recruited by his famous colleague. The Netflix docuseries ends with Salerno implying that Ramirez may have killed several people before his first documented murders in 1985.

In the present, Salerno is now retired after spending decades working as an investigator. He reportedly (via The Wrap) helped establish the FBI’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Program, and has also taught courses at San Jose State University as well as at the California Department of Justice (per Distractify).

Night Stalker: What Happened To Investigator Gil Carrillo

In Night Stalker, Laurel Erickson discusses her experiences reporting on the Ramirez case while working for KNBC. It’s a disappointing post-script moment, as Night Stalker invests little time exploring the subject’s childhood years, at least beyond a brief two-minute sequence that reveals he was tied to a graveyard cross by his father and witnessed a relative kill a woman. According to evidence presented in the 2020 HBO documentary Crazy, Not Insane, Ramirez’s motivations for murder connect with childhood trauma.

Ramirez died from cancer in June 2013 at age 53. He’d been on Death Row for nearly 30 years and was engaged to Christine Lee, a long-time supporter who frequently defended the serial killer on TV.
