Nightwing Princess Cake Confirms Dick Grayson Has Best Fans in Comics

Comic fans are always finding creative ways to celebrate their favorite heroes, but Nightwing’s fans may be the best at it. @._yeesa recently shared a ‘princess’ cake on Instagram, which has since been seen and reshared by members of Nightwing’s current creative team on Twitter. This cake celebrates Dick Grayson while also symbolizing the creativity the character seems to inspire in fans and creators alike.

Nightwing began his journey as Batman’s sidekick Robin in 1940, within the pages of Detective Comics #38. In 1984, he took up his own persona of Nightwing, in Tales of the Teen Titans #44. Since then, he has also been Batman, a secret agent, and one of Gotham and Blüdhaven’s best protectors. He has been beloved by fans for decades, and they keep finding new ways to show their appreciation.

The cake, as posted on Instagram by @_.yeesa, and shared by Nightwing artist Bruno Redondo on Twitter, features Dick Grayson in a very distinct style. The masked hero has become a princess cake, otherwise known as a Dolly Varden cake. These cakes typically feature a female doll whose torso is then placed at the center of a cake, which is decorated as a dress, completing the overall ensemble. Nightwing has had many looks over the years, but this may be his sweetest yet – literally! With an incredibly well-reviewed revamp underway and creative fan projects like this one, Redondo observes that “it’s definitely the Nightwing era.”

This Nightwing cake was a birthday present for the baker’s sister and it is certainly a fantastic piece of culinary fan art. It adds a collar to his suit and provides him with a dress featuring his symbol. It maintains his color scheme, predominantly being black with blue and yellow star accents. Additionally, Nightwing wears a belt of pearls around his waist that would surely make Batman cry, given their involvement in his tragic origin. To top it off, Dick Grayson is holding a bouquet of beautiful yellow flowers. This is certainly a very creative endeavor and considering the challenges it must have presented – particularly regarding Nightwing’s well-endowed figure – this is a delightful delicacy.

A superhero who has literally grown up in front of fans, establishing his own identity, Nightwing tends to attract a special kind of appreciation. Creators have a tendency to approach Dick’s stories with some extra panache, for instance telling them backwards through time or – as in the upcoming Nightwing #87 – in a single, comic-length image, and don’t shy away from fan service with art that showcases his physique. Canonically well-loved by other heroes, Dick deals with serious crimes but generally maintains a confident, easy-going attitude that encourages fans to do the same in their celebration of him.

It isn’t every day that DC’s Bat-Family gets to star in a Dolly Varden cake – or in this case, a Dicky Varden cake. However, this is exactly the kind of fun that the family would have with one another, and Dick’s adoptive brothers would certainly want to snap several photos of the dessert. @_.yeesa has done a stellar job of presenting Nightwing with an alternate occupation: modeling. His fans certainly wouldn’t disagree with his ability to pull off many looks, of which this dress – or one similar to it – could be one. Nightwing is always up for a challenge and there’s no question that he excels at being an incredible cake thanks to his talented and creative fans.
