The cast of Nine Perfect Strangers is an interesting group. The titular nine characters all come to Tranquillum to fix part or all of their lives, and none of them are as put together as they try to make themselves out to be. At the same time, the Tranquillum staff isn’t as forthcoming as they should be with their guests.
Some of the cast really just goes along with it all, while others are a bit smarter, questioning what’s going on around them or even being the ones leading the charge. In the end, it was clear that some of the characters were far more intelligent than others.
10 Carmel
Carmel might not have her life completely together – far from it, actually. She’s a violent person who’s constantly seeking to fix the parts of herself that were broken when her husband left her. Nevertheless, she’s very intelligent. She managed to completely disguise herself beyond recognition when she shot Masha, and was also able to sneak into Tranquillum, still undetected as the perpetrator. Not everyone could pull that off.
9 Jessica
Jessica might not come off as one of the more intelligent characters in the show, but she absolutely is. While she’s portrayed as the social media-obsessed influencer who only cares about herself, she’s incredibly tuned in to both her emotions and her husband’s. She actively tries to implement methods to save their relationship, and even manages to end up purchasing and running Tranquillum at the end of the series. Once again, not a feat that just anyone could pull off.
8 Tony
Tony is in a pretty similar situation as Jessica when it comes to his intelligence. While he might not seem like an especially intelligent person, he is in tune with his emotions and decisions, and he realizes exactly why his life has turned out the way it has.
As such, while the experience he has at Tranquillum might not be what he was originally intending, he does go to better his life. And by the time he’s done, he manages to kick the drugs, re-establish a relationship with his daughters, and begin a relationship with Frances.
7 Heather
Heather’s been hurt in her life, and as such, she makes one very smart decision during her stay at Tranquillum, not trusting every single thing that Nicole Kidman’s Masha says. The others generally follow what she says without question, but Heather is the first person to bring Masha’s dosing to everyone’s attention, forcing Masha to explain the situation. She caught this first and foremost when the thought hadn’t even crossed the mind of the other guests.
6 Zoe
Zoe, just like her mother Heather, is also very intelligent. While her parents pretend to look happy and put together for her sake, Zoe sees right through it with ease. She also manages to keep her parents at Tranquillum when her 21st birthday comes up, which is ultimately the right choice for her family. While she doesn’t make any flashy moves during the show that shows off her intelligence, she is quietly smart, making sound choices throughout.
5 Frances
Frances, who is already intelligent as she is an accomplished writer, is one of the rocks at Tranquillium for many of the guests. She’s there for everyone, despite how much trouble she may be having in her own life when it comes to memories of her ex that scammed her.
Frances is able to offer sound advice to those around her, such as Jessica and Zoe, while also helping Tony get back on the right track. When it comes to people, Frances is very intelligent.
4 Lars
Lars is a reporter that, save for certain people like Masha, manages to infiltrate Tranquillium completely undetected, something that absolutely requires a bit of intelligence to pull off. Beyond this, he’s also emotionally intelligent enough to know that he’s not ready to have a baby with his boyfriend – until he finished his stay at Tranquillium, that is. Lars is easily one of the smartest of the group.
3 Yao
Yao is a very intelligent member of the staff of Tranquillium. He’s very easily able to step in for Masha and help guide the guests whenever she isn’t available to do so, proving that he absolutely has what it takes to run certain areas of Tranquillium when necessary. This isn’t a job that anyone could easily fill. In terms of intelligence, though, he doesn’t compare to his partner-in-crime, Delilah.
2 Delilah
Delilah is easily one of the most intelligent characters on the show. Beyond her ability to fill Masha’s role when needed, just like Yao, she’s also able to see through Masha’s reassurances that everything is fine. She is willing to question Masha and go against her when she knows that something isn’t right. She even goes as far as to call the police when things so off the rails. Unlike Yao, she doesn’t act like Masha’s mindless soldier. She listens to her intuition.
1 Masha
Masha is far and away the smartest character on Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers. She has proven that she’s able to climb the corporate ladder, start her own wellness retreat, microdose a group of people without them knowing, and even figure out how to properly use drugs to more or less bring people back from the dead in one’s mind. And, of course, she figured out how to heal nine broken people. Masha’s intelligence truly knows no bounds. Some things Masha does might seem like they make no sense, but she always has a plan in mind.
