There are rumors circulating that a Nintendo Direct is coming in early September, possibly within the next two weeks. This prediction seems as safe as betting on the Harlem Globetrotters, as Nintendo has been holding a Direct or similar digital event every September for the past few years.
The frequency of Nintendo Directs slowed down in 2020, which many attributed to the pandemic throwing the release schedule of upcoming games into question. Nintendo brought these digital events back in full force in 2021, with a massive E3 2021 Nintendo Direct being the most recent. There have also been a number of smaller partner showcases, including a couple Nintendo Indie World streams. The late 2021 release schedule for Nintendo Switch games seems to be set in stone at this point, and it’s unlikely that any potential surprise game reveals dropped at the rumored Nintendo Direct will be coming this year. If there are any other Nintendo Directs on the way, then they will probably focus on what games the company is releasing in the 2021 holiday season and early 2022.
Prominent leaker Zippo claims on Blogger that a Nintendo Direct will be happening soon, likely during the first couple week of the month. The showcase will supposedly give looks at games coming within the next few months, like Metroid Dread, Advance Wars 1+2, and Mario Party Superstars. According to them, it will also reveal the final DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. There will apparently be information about games coming in 2022, as well, which could include Splatoon 3, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, or the still-unnamed sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Zippo also mentions that the latest rumors surrounding a Nintendo Switch Online announcement are accurate. This is likely referring to speculation about Game Boy and Game Boy Color games joining NES and SNES games for NSO subscribers. The timing of these games coming to Nintendo Switch Online makes sense, as early fall is usually the period when annual NSO subscriptions run out – more retro first-party games would be provide an incentive to subscribe for another year.
Of course, it’s entirely possible that all of the rumors about this unannounced Nintendo Direct are shots in the dark based purely on the company’s history of September events. It’s more of a question of whether the pieces of information, such as the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fighter reveal and Game Boy games on Nintendo Switch Online, are accurate. September is already here, and if a Nintendo Direct is on the way, Nintendo would have to announce it soon.
