Nintendo DS Hidden Gems & Underrated Games

From a certain way of looking at it, the Nintendo DS is the start of the movement within Nintendo that would lead to the huge success of the Nintendo Switch. In the era of the Nintendo GameCube, the house of Mario languished behind Microsoft and Sony’s offerings. Even big franchises like Super Mario floundered, and it felt like Nintendo was out of ideas.

The release of the Nintendo DS made it impossible to think that ever again. Two screens, a touchscreen, a stylus, a microphone, and games that took advantage of all of them at once. The DS library is full of innovation and wonder, some of which were sadly overlooked in their day.

Any platform as prolific as the DS is bound to have games that receive less attention than they deserve, but the DS also presents a special case. As would become the norm for Nintendo platforms going forward, the DS’s unique setup meant that its games had a hard time migrating to other platforms, even those released by Nintendo. There have been attempted ports and rereleases, but nothing ever comes close to the experience on the original hardware. For this reason, there have been many great Nintendo DS releases that go under the radar. Here are just a few that could use a second look.

Nintendo DS Hidden Gems: Meteos

Nintendo DS Hidden Gems & Underrated Games

Designed by Super Smash Bros. Director Masahiro Sakurai and produced by Lumines creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi, Meteos is a falling block puzzler where the blocks shoot towards the sky instead of simply disappearing. This affects the board and the new blocks coming in, since blocks carry whatever is above them with them as they blast off. The game received a follow-up on XBLA, but the original touch controls are the definitive way to play.

Nintendo DS Hidden Gems: Fossil Fighters

Nintendo already has the monster-catching genre locked up with the incredibly merchandisable Pokémon, but they’ve been eager to invest in alternatives over the years. One of those is Fossil Fighters, a dinosaur-centric franchise that started on the Nintendo DS in 2009. There are three games in total, with each one providing a fun experience for anyone who wants to collect raptors and tyrannosaurs.

Nintendo DS Hidden Gems: Retro Game Challenge

Based on the cult-classic Japanese TV variety show GameCenter CX, Retro Game Challenge is a series of NES-inspired challenges meant to prove a player’s retro gaming mettle. The game has two sequels in Japan but sold poorly in America in spite of universal critical acclaim.

This is likely due to the source material’s mostly unofficial presence on Western shores, a situation that has also made the game a valued collector’s piece for many Nintendo DS enthusiasts.

Nintendo DS Hidden Gems: Elite Beat Agents

A Westernized translation of the Japan-only Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, Elite Beat Agents is an over-the-top rhythm game where the three titular government agents are on a mission to get various citizens through difficult parts of their everyday lives. Despite the out-there concept, Elite Beat Agents nails its touchscreen gameplay and provides a bit of nostalgia thanks to several of the pop songs on its licensed soundtrack.

Nintendo DS Hidden Gems: Henry Hatsworth In The Puzzling Adventure

Nintendo DS Hidden Gems & Underrated Games

Combining 2D platforming with Tetris Attack-style puzzling, Henry Hatsworth is a fine genre mixture that was developed by a small team housed at Madden NFL developers EA Tiburon. The Nintendo DS’s two screens are very important to the adventure, as players can see the platforming and puzzle stages at all times.

Nintendo DS Hidden Gems: Jump Ultimate Stars

A hidden gem mostly just because it never made it over to America, Jump Ultimate Stars brings over the Super Smash Bros. formula to the world of Shonen Jump. With characters from Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and countless more, the roster is the dream of anyone who watched Toonami after school growing up. All that plus gameplay that blows Jump Force out of the water makes this a must-play.

Nintendo DS Hidden Gems: Aliens Infestation

A Metroidvania based on the Alien franchise developed by WayForward should be a well-known classic, but that’s not the fate of the oft-overlooked Aliens Infestation. WayForward put out the best gaming translation of the franchise until Alien: Isolation came around, and the world is enjoyable to explore even for those who don’t care for the franchise. It’s certainly a licensed game worthy of a remaster.
