The Nintendo Switch’s Online Expansion trailer has become the most disliked video on YouTube, just weeks after it was posted to the Nintendo YouTube channel. Players are clearly voicing their outrage at Nintendo’s decision to aggressively price the Switch Online Expansion, which lets gamers play old-school Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis games on their Switch.

Although the announcement that classic Nintendo games like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Mario Kart 64 would now be available to Switch players was incredibly well-received, the pricing was not. Once the price tag for the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion was revealed – $49.99 a year for the service – players were understandably upset. They took their anger out on the announcement video, flooding it with dislikes. Although this is nothing new for Nintendo, which has seen game trailers get met with negative reception in the past, the vitriol and anger shown towards the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion has been surprising in terms of its scope.

As revealed by VGC, the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion trailer has surpassed the E3 trailer of Metroid Prime: Federation Force way back in 2015 to become Nintendo’s most-disliked video ever. The trailer has passed over 100,000 dislikes as of the publish date, compared to only 17,000 likes. The previous record holder, the aforementioned Metroid Prime trailer, only had 96,000 dislikes to its 11,000 likes. VCG notes that the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion trailer has 500,000 fewer views than the Metroid Prime trailer, and hit the 100k dislike mark only 16 days after it was published.

It is quite impressive that the trailer has managed to leap to 100,000 dislikes so quickly. The strong response is a clear indication that Nintendo fans are unhappy with the direction the company is going with the new services. In fact, from the time that the trailer passed 50,000 dislikes to when it hit 100,000 dislikes, the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion only gained around 1,000 likes.

In addition to the price, Nintendo players have expressed concerns about the quality of the older games ports. For instance, players noticed that the Switch version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time appears to be a graphical downgrade, despite the fact that it is running on what should be superior hardware. Unfortunately, until Nintendo addresses these concerns, it seems more likely than not that players will continue to flood the trailer with dislikes. Lowering the price could certainly address the bulk of the players’ complaints, but ultimately it seems that what players really want is to make sure they are getting good value for their Nintendo Switch purchase.
