The characters in Pretty Little Liars are complex, so it’s no surprise that some things they say don’t match their typical personalities.

Pretty Little Liars boasts a list of arguably the most complex character personalities on TV. There’s no doubt that PLL fans were kept on their toes throughout the series’ seven seasons, and that’s mainly because the arcs of its various personalities changed constantly.

Even though it was difficult to keep up with who was playing for what team, the characters still had certain traits that defined them. Given their complexity, though, it’s no surprise that there were moments when the characters completely flipped on themselves and what was expected from them.

Ashley Marin

“So Much Has Happened The Past Few Years. I Think I’m Scared.”

Ashley Marin was always an independent mother, and this was not surprising considering she was left to raise Hanna on her own. Hanna was always her priority and she did whatever she could to put her first.

Ashley did many risky things in her life like stealing money from the bank and sleeping with Detective Wilden to stop him from pressing shoplifting charges against Hanna. The previous year’s events were never shown to have a major effect on Ashley, so it never seemed like she was afraid.

Caleb Rivers

“What’s Wrong With Cancun? Don’t Knock It Until You’ve Been There.”

Introduced later in season 1, Caleb Rivers started as the brooding bad boy who was very laid back. He was the person the girls turned to when they had a technical issue, like decrypting A’s phone.

Caleb was always very protective of Hanna and as the seasons developed, his character always had a serious tone. He wasn’t one to crack jokes often so this line of sarcasm that came after Spencer referred to Hanna being drunk in Cancun wasn’t something that fans were familiar with.

Toby Cavanaugh

“You And Your Posse Deserve A Lot Worse.”

Everyone believing that Toby was the person who was involved in Ali’s disappearance lasted no longer than a few episodes. He had a gentle nature and always put the people he loved first which was shown early on.

Although Ali made his life a misery, Toby never resorted to threatening or hurting her. When Ali visited him in juvy, he said he believed that they all deserve a lot more than a few threatening notes. Even though he didn’t know the girls at the time, Toby never would’ve wanted any physical harm to come to any of them.

Ezra Fitz

“I Knew Who All Of You Were, And That’s Why I Applied To Teach At Rosewood.”

Ezra Fitz was the caring teacher at Rosewood High who had nothing but love for Aria, even if it wasn’t a straightforward path to get him there. Even though teaching gave him so much joy, his true passion was later revealed to be writing.

The biggest plot twist of season 4 was when Ezra was thought to be a part of the A Team. It was later revealed that he wasn’t but was writing a book about Alison. Despite this, Ezra was never thought to be a devious or manipulative character, so this didn’t fit in with his character’s innocent nature.

Mona Vanderwaal

“I’m Not The One Calling The Shots.”

Starting as Hanna’s harmless friend to ending up in Radley, Mona went through every possible personality she could find. Her character changed from season to season and it was almost impossible to know what side she was playing for. One thing that is for certain was that she was normally always in control.

Mona spent the first two seasons tormenting the girls and even after she was revealed as A and went through some sort of redemption, she still usually had an ulterior motive. Hearing her openly say that she wasn’t the one calling the shots was far from believable.

Alison DiLaurentis

“I Am Ashamed Of The Way I Treated You.”

It’s no debate that Alison DiLaurentis was severely complex when it came to her personality traits. In the earlier seasons, it’s arguable that Ali was pure evil, however, when she returned, it did look like she’d changed.

From bullying people to blackmailing her friends, Ali did some truly horrible things in her teenage years. Although her character development saw a lot of positive changes, it was still difficult to know whether the things she said were genuine, like when she apologized to Paige for everything she did to her in school.

Hanna Marin

“I Can’t. I’ve Got Homework.”

Hanna Marin is the girl who said what everyone was thinking. She had the best sense of humor and her wit was undeniable. Her personality was often a light when the girls were going through dark times, and even when she was knocked down (literally), she found the strength to get back up again.

School was never a priority for Hanna like it was for Spencer, so when Aria asks her if she wants to go and get a pedicure, her response couldn’t be further from the Hanna that everyone knows.

Aria Montgomery

“I’m Telling Him Everything About Me And Ezra.”

As someone who always went after what she wanted, Aria Montgomery was very headstrong. Some of the things she had to endure were part of the most relatable Pretty Little Liars storylines, and she was arguably the most “alternative” girl in the group.

When Aria believed Ezra was on the A Team, she was understandably heartbroken. She had spent the majority of her teenage years trying to protect their relationship, so it came as a shock that she was willing to tell her principal something that would have had devastating consequences.

Spencer Hastings

“You Don’t Know Who I Am Anymore, And You Can’t Count On Me.”

Spencer Hastings was the intelligent one of the group and always had a practical solution when the girls came head to head with a problem. When the surprising Pretty Little Liars plot twist of Toby helping A was revealed and Spencer got sent to Radley, it came as a shock to everyone.

The four girls formed such a bond that meant they knew each other better than anyone. Spencer was arguably the leader of the group after Ali disappeared, and one thing the girls could always do was count on her.

Emily Fields

“I’ll Show Someone My Boobs, And We’ll Be News Again.”

Arguably the most innocent of the liars, Emily Fields was very reserved when it came to relationships and she always gave people the benefit of the doubt when no one else would. Coming out was vital to her character development and was a real turning point for her.

After Maya’s death, Emily turned to drink to cope with her grief, something she’d never been through before. Her sensitive side was ever-present within her character, except a drunk moment in the barn saw this trait go out the window for a few minutes.
