Nintendo has finally released a Twitch app for the Nintendo Switch, even though the system was released four years ago. Microsoft and Sony ensured that their current-gen systems launched with streaming apps, so that the consumer doesn’t have a reason to use another device to watch TV shows, even though many TVs come with these apps already loaded.

Nintendo has not been so generous with streaming apps on the Switch. It didn’t take long for the system to receive Hulu and YouTube apps, but other streaming services were a long time coming. The Switch launched in 2017, yet it only received a Funimation app at the end of 2020. This means that there are many streaming apps that cannot be used on the Switch, without hacking the system.

The Switch has just received a new streaming app and it has been a long time coming. According to the Nintendo of America Twitter page, it’s now possible to download Twitch on Nintendo Switch. The Twitch app only requires 31MB of space, and it can be enjoyed while the console is in handheld mode. One thing that’s strange about the addition of Twitch to the Switch is Nintendo’s stance towards streamers, as people weren’t allowed to stream Nintendo’s E3 2021 event on Twitch. It’s unclear whether this stance will change in the future, but the addition of the app to Nintendo’s console might be a good sign of change to come for fans and streamers.

Despite the company’s apparent hostility toward streamers with regards to its E3 2021 livestream, Nintendo has worked with Twitch in the past. In 2019, for instance, Nintendo partnered with Twitch to give Twitch Prime members Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions. It’s just curious that it has taken this long for the app to appear on Nintendo Switch. The Switch has yet to receive an app for Netflix, even though its predecessors had one. This could be a sign of Nintendo’s attitude changing towards non-gaming apps on the system, especially as the Switch is still in the middle of its lifespan.

The Nintendo Switch is lacking in some features that should be standard, such as a native Internet browser, folders for game icons, and custom themes. It seems that Nintendo’s goal with the Switch has been to keep the Home menu as clutter-free as possible, in order to ensure that everything loads quickly. The Nintendo Wii U was notorious for its long load times, and the Switch’s basic offerings could be an attempt to make sure everything boots as quickly as possible. This has become especially important, as the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S run games at lightning speed, thanks to their internal SSDs, so the Switch needs all the help it can get to keep up.
