No, GameStop Didn’t Create A Vaccine For Coronavirus

In a development that will surprise absolutely no one, GameStop has, in fact, not created a vaccine that will solve the global coronavirus pandemic.

GameStop is the last organization anyone would expect to solve the coronavirus pandemic, and no, GameStop did not create a vaccine for the deadly disease. It’s a rumor so outlandish that it almost goes without saying, but the used video game and geek culture retailer is not in the business of developing complex cures for contagions capable of grinding travel and everyday life as we know it to a near-halt, nor should it ever be.

Anyone familiar with GameStop’s deepening financial straits in recent years knows that its employees are far too busy struggling with the fallout caused by the digital games market’s growing prevalence over physical sales of new and used games to worry about much else. Considering the immense strain COVID-19 and companies’ growing efforts to slow its spread are putting on the world economy, GameStop is probably far too preoccupied with determining how to survive an extra fiscal quarter in the likely event of next-gen consoles being delayed to even consider synthesizing a breakthrough vaccine for which it has no experience, personnel, or infrastructure.

The hilariously preposterous rumor popped into existence when GameStop’s corporate apparatus put out a press release meant to calm customers and shareholders, as all American companies have done since the nation’s worst fears about COVID-19 proved true. The letter hits all the notes one would expect at this point, announcing that sanitization efforts will be undergone at every GameStop location, encouraging employees and customers to to self-isolate if symptomatic, and assuring that the company is taking the pandemic seriously. Simple stuff, right? Judging by the below tweet from dairyorange, evidently not, as a questionable screenshot of an alleged Daily News article somehow took that simple statement to mean that GameStop has “isolated the coronavirus, a crucial part of eventually developing a vacccine” to allow its customers to forever game on in peace.

Although the Daily News screenshot looks relatively convincing, it’s either a fake or an ill-advised prank on the part of writer Joseph Wilkinson, but the former is the most likely bet. The article itself can’t be found anywhere on the site, but a quick look at Wilkinson’s Daily News author profile reveals no stories to have been published by him at the time in question on March 14, let alone the laughably absurd one that the screenshot suggests. Many are joking that former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé’s appointment to the GameStop board of directors is to thank for the company’s fast turnaround on the imaginary vaccine, which almost makes the whole surreal situation worth it. However, anyone hoping for anything more than a laugh will be greatly disappointed to know that GameStop’s future store plans would do more to spread viruses than cure them.

The creator of the fake screenshot likely sees its spread as a harmless joke, and there’s certainly plenty of room for much-needed laughter amid the grave danger COVID-19 presents to society’s most vulnerable. However, considering both the ease with which false information can be shared as fact on modern social platforms and the devastating logistical strain that the current situation is placing on everything from Xbox Live to the the ill-equipped US healthcare system, perhaps more care should be taken when discussing much-needed vaccines, even when attributed to a source as ridiculous as GameStop.
