The second trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home showed more of Doctor Octopus’ return, and one particular scene with him shows an important and annoying difference between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man universe. So far, the MCU has been its own universe and hasn’t paid attention to past superheroes movies, but with Phase 4 now exploring the complex and dangerous concept of the multiverse, the MCU is now bringing together three Spider-Man universes in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
After Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) framed Spider-Man (Tom Holland) for his death and revealed the web-slinger’s identity to the world at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Spider-Man: No Way Home will see Peter dealing with the consequences of his biggest secret being exposed. Peter will go to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help, asking him to cast a spell that will make everyone forget he’s Spider-Man, but the spell won’t go as planned and they will open the gates to the multiverse. This will allow the arrival of villains from other universes and past Spider-Man movies, as are Electro (Jamie Foxx), Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Lizard, and Sandman.
So far, the trailers for Spider-Man: No Way Home have mostly focused on Doctor Octopus, pointing at him playing an important role in the story, and the second trailer showed that he had no idea there were other Peter Parkers. The trailer cuts to a scene where Doc Ock is being held captive in an underground installation, where Peter, MJ (Zendaya), and Ned (Jacob Batalon) start to interrogate him. Peter asks what Doc Ock’s real name is, to which the Spider-Man 2 villain replies “Doctor Otto Octavius”, causing the trio to laugh. Although this is, on the surface, a light moment on the trailer, it actually shows an annoying difference between the sense of humor of the MCU and Raimi’s universe: the latter was a lot more clever with it, while the MCU is sometimes borderline cruel.
Doctor Octopus made his debut in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, and there was a gag with his name when J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) was trying to find a villain name for him, which included a reference to Doctor Strange. Unlike the scene in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer, the one in Spider-Man 2 came from an antagonistic character like Jameson and was played in a more serious way that fitted the tone of the movie, with Jameson even saying “what are the odds” that a guy named Otto Octavius would end up with eight limbs. The scene in No Way Home, on the other hand, comes from the hero of the story (and his friends) and feels more mean-spirited as a result. It also doesn’t really fit the MCU as “Doctor Otto Octavius” surely isn’t a funnier or weirder name than, for example, Happy Hogan or Pepper Potts.
Although the MCU has stood out for its sense of humor, it doesn’t always come off as the writers would wish, and the “Doctor Otto Octavius” scene in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer is a good example. Sam Raimi knew how to add humor in ways that fitted the scene and the character delivering the jokes, which is something the MCU doesn’t always get right, and this specific scene only ends up making Peter Parker, the supposed good guy, look more like mean guy.
