Not So Fast iPad — Samsungs New Galaxy Tab A8 Budget Tablet Just Leaked

All-new renders of Samsung’s latest Galaxy Tab A8 just leaked — and they make Apple’s 9th gen iPad look a lot less interesting. When it comes to the tablet world, Apple’s dominated the space for years. Whether it be the baseline iPad or the top-of-the-line iPad Pro, few companies seldom have a real chance at competing against Apple’s prowess in the niche. On September 14, Apple continued that dominance with its unveiling of the iPad 9 and iPad mini 6.

Despite all of this, Samsung has persistently competed against Apple’s tablets as much as it can. It has flagship models, dirt cheap ones, and others that fall somewhere in the middle. Samsung ended its 2020 tablets on a high note with the Tab S7 and S7+, and just last month, the Tab S7 FE debuted with a similarly great experience at a more affordable price.

Now, it appears that Samsung has a new budget tablet in the works. In partnership with @OnLeaks, the folks at 91Mobiles shared a series of leaked renders for the 2021 version of the Galaxy Tab A8. The Tab A8 is believed to be a successor to the Tab A7, which launched just about a year ago in September 2020. The Galaxy Tab A7 was pretty well-received as a quality budget tablet, meaning the new Tab A8 is already working on a pretty strong foundation.

What’s Revealed In These Galaxy Tab A8 Renders

Taking a look at the renders for the new Galaxy Tab A8, the design is a subtle evolution of the Tab A7. There are still fairly large bezels around the display, a front-facing camera built into the right bezel, and a horizontal Samsung logo on the back. The biggest design tweak is the 8MP rear camera, which now has a round shape instead of the A7’s square housing. The right frame of the tablet is home to a fingerprint sensor and volume rocker, there are dual speakers on the top and bottom frames, along with both a USB-C port and 3.5mm headphone jack. Also similar to the Tab A7, the Galaxy Tab A8 features a 10.4-inch display — likely with a Full HD+ resolution.

Specifications for the Galaxy Tab A8 remain a mystery, though this is an area where Samsung has a chance to really impress. The Snapdragon 662 and 3-4GB of RAM of the Tab A7 were both adequate for daily use. However, upgrades to both of these things would be greatly appreciated. It’s also rumored that the Tab A8 may increase its display resolution beyond Full HD+, which would give it another key advantage over its predecessor.

The Galaxy Tab A8 may not be the most exciting tablet to look forward to, but it does act as a reminder that the new iPad 9 isn’t the only affordable tablet to keep on your radar. Furthermore, considering the Tab A7’s $230 retail price (often discounted to $180), the Galaxy Tab A8 is bound to be much more affordable than the $329 iPad. There’s currently no ETA when the Tab A8 will launch, but expect it to arrive before the year is over.
