Office Revival Could Be Set During Original Show’s Run Says Showrunner

Greg Daniels, showrunner of The Office, says that a reunion of the cast members could take the form of new episodes set during the show’s original run. The long-running NBC sitcom was an American adaptation of the legendary British sitcom of the same name, the brainchild of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Set at the Scranton, PA, office of a fictional paper company, the mockumentary series follows the daily mishaps of the staff. Adversarial salesmen Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) and Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson), meek receptionist Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer), and a handful of other employees work for the weekend under their well-intentioned catastrophe of a boss, Michael Scott (Steve Carell). The American adaptation is itself regarded as one of the greatest sitcoms of all time and ran for 9 seasons between 2005 and 2013.

In the midst of the pandemic, a number of television and film casts came together for reunions or table reads via Zoom. Notably, Parks and Recreation, Daniels’ other workplace sitcom which he co-created with Michael Schur, had a thirty-minute reunion Zoom call with a script for the cast to read in-character. They raised nearly $3 million for Feeding America’s COVID-19 Response Fund. Eight years after The Office left the air, the fanbase remains as strong as ever, so naturally many dreamed about a possible reunion. The cast did come together for a wedding on Krasinski’s YouTube series Some Good News, but nothing officially sanctioned.

Speaking to E! News, Daniels shared his ideas for an Office reunion. Rather than just a Zoom table read or a trip down memory lane, Daniels hints that a revival is more likely now that the series is on Peacock. Since the series finale sees most of the cast move on from Dunder Mifflin, it would be difficult to bring them all together for a follow-up, so Daniels says that episodes set during the series’ original run, as if they’re back in 2010, would be for the best. Daniels said:

“I think [a revival is] probably more likely now that the show is on Peacock, but no plans right now certainly…The weird thing about that is when we ended it, we jumped forward a year and a lot of [the characters] aren’t working [at Dunder Mifflin] anymore. But it would be fun to find some lost episodes and shoot them as if they were back in 2010 or something.”

The Office fans were up in arms just recently as the series left its longtime streaming home of Netflix for NBC’s own Peacock. The series is apparently a comfort watch for many, and so fans were understandably upset at the move. But Daniels hints that bringing the series back into their home turf seems to have reignited interest in the show and its characters at NBC. A revival is more tangible now than it was before.

Until then, NBC will continue to heavily promote the series, undoubtedly one of if not the biggest draw to the up-and-coming streaming service. The network went back into the vault to uncover never-before-seen footage that is being released exclusively on Peacock, including a final prank that Jim pulled on Dwight. With NBC looking to win over fans upset at the move from Netflix and hoping to entice new fans, we may be returning to The Office sooner than we think.
