Olivia Munn almost played an entirely different character in Iron Man 2 – here’s her role in the MUC movie explained and why her first part was cut. TV host-turned-actress Olivia Munn has played quite a few Marvel universe characters during her career. Back in 2016, she appeared in X-Men: Apocalypse as Psylocke (AKA Betsy Braddock) – a villainous mutant with telekinetic and telepathic powers recruited by Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse to help bring about the end of the world; Psylocke was previously played by Meiling Melançon in Fox’s X-Men movie franchise.

More recently, Munn was cast in Marvel’s upcoming adult-oriented animation Hit-Monkey. The series arrives on Hulu in November 2021 and tells the tale of a wronged Japanese snow monkey (the titular Hit-Monkey, voiced by Fred Tatasciore) who sets out to avenge the slaughter of his tribe by killing his way through the Yakuza underworld. Munn will voice Akiko – the smart, ambitious niece of a kind-hearted politician named Shinji Yokohama, who is voiced by Star Trek legend George Takei.

Before those, Olivia Munn’s first role with Marvel came with a small part she had in Iron Man 2. She played reporter Chess Roberts, a Marvel character whose first and only comics appearance came in a 1998 issue of Iron Man. Munn’s Iron Man 2 incarnation of Chess Roberts is a journalist working for the fictional TV network WHiH World News and appears during a scene towards the start of the sequel reporting live from the opening ceremony of the Stark Expo.

Interestingly, Munn was originally cast as a completely different character in Iron Man 2. She was supposed to play a woman named Rebeca who attends Stark’s birthday party and ends up spending the night with him. According to an MTV interview with Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau, Munn’s original scenes were pretty funny but as the film took a darker turn he realized they felt off-key and so they ended up on the cutting room floor. Luckily for Munn, Favreau was so impressed with her work that he invited her back to play Chess Roberts instead.

Olivia Munn’s original Iron Man 2 character wasn’t completely scrapped from the film, however. Munn’s Rebeca instead morphed into “Rebeka” who was played by Russian American actress Anya Monzikova. Like the original version of the character, Rebekah was in attendance at Tony Stark’s birthday bash but – unlike Munn – Monzikova is yet to play another Marvel character.
