Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Vs Buds Pro Should You Spend $150 or $200

The Galaxy Buds 2 and Galaxy Buds Pro are two of Samsung’s most compelling earbud options available in 2021 — making the decision of which to buy not immediately clear. Ever since the original AirPods hit the scene in 2016, the market for true wireless earbuds has been on a constant rise. Apple dominates sales, Sony and Bose have strongholds on the premium sector, and countless brands on Amazon have earbuds available between $25 and $100.

Standing out in the earbud niche is no easy task, but it’s something Samsung’s consistently managed to do over the years. While the original Galaxy Buds left a lot to be desired, they were quickly succeeded by the vastly improved Galaxy Buds+. Samsung has since catered to a variety of prices and feature sets over the years, launching the Galaxy Buds Live, Buds Pro, and – most recently — the Buds 2.

Upon first glance, the Galaxy Buds 2 and Buds Pro look virtually identical. The earbuds have the same in-ear design, oval shape, and square charging case that opens from the top. Digging a bit deeper, however, some of the design differences quickly become apparent. The Buds 2 are physically smaller than the Buds Pro and slightly lighter at just 5g compared to 6.3g. The Buds 2 also have a matte finish compared to the glossy finish of the Buds Pro, along with a two-tone case design against the one-color styling of the Buds Pro case. This is a long-winded way of saying that both the Buds 2 and Buds Pro have solid hardware. They’re lightweight, comfortable, compact, and manage to look good while doing so.

Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Vs. Buds Pro Specs & Price

The similarities between the Buds 2 and Buds Pro even carry over to some of their most fundamental features. Both earbuds are equipped with dynamic two-way speakers, three microphones, active noise canceling, and an ambient mode. While the earbuds are identical on paper, expect the Buds Pro to perform better in real-world use. Whether that’s with more premium audio, stronger ANC, or a more natural-sounding ambient mode, the experience of the Buds Pro is a step above their Buds 2 counterpart. That edge levels out a bit when it comes to battery life. The Galaxy Buds 2 are rated for up to 5 hours of playback with ANC (20 hours with the charging case) and up to 7.5 hours with ANC off (29 hours with the charging case). By comparison, the Galaxy Buds Pro are slightly worse. They’re promised the same 5 hours of use with ANC, but get just 18 hours of total endurance with the charging case. When ANC is disabled, the Buds Pro last up to 8 hours continuously and 28 hours total with the case.

Then there are all of the smaller items. Both earbuds have a water resistance rating, but the Galaxy Buds 2 are just IPX2 while the Buds Pro are IPX7. The Galaxy Buds Pro also have a few features not found on the Buds 2 at all, including Intelligent ANC to automatically adjust noise canceling and ambient mode based on the surrounding environment. The Buds Pro can also pause music when they detect the user is talking, along with automatically pausing and playing music when the earbuds are removed and put back in someone’s ears.

Finally, there’s the matter of price. The Galaxy Buds 2 have an MSRP of $150, whereas the Galaxy Buds Pro cost $200. For that $50 price difference, it is impressive just how similar the Buds 2 really are. They deliver many of the biggest features from the Buds Pro, good audio quality, nearly identical battery life, and an even lighter design. Some folks will find enough value in the added features of the Galaxy Buds Pro to spend the extra $50, but that ultimately comes down to personal preference. The Buds Pro are still Samsung’s flagship earbuds, but at just $150, the Buds 2 are an excellent lower-cost alternative.
