Once Upon A Time: 10 Crazy Things You Didn’t Know About Prince Charming

Once Upon a Time’s Prince Charming is a central character of the series for obvious reasons. But there are a few things fans may not know about him.

Once Upon A Time follows the life and journeys of various characters taken out of fairytale and children’s literature. One of the main characters in the series is David Nolan (a.k.a Prince Charming). Despite a difficult past where he lives as the son of poor farmers, he soon becomes a prince and marries Snow White. Unfortunately, the two are separated through various timelines and the various curses that are thrown onto their world.

David Nolan proves himself to be a born leader, a loyal father, and a husband, always putting his loved ones first and doing whatever is necessary to get the job done.

10 His Father Was An Alcoholic

David Nolan grew up around his father, Robert’s, alcohol dependence. The latter leaves the family for two weeks and promises to return sober. Tragically, he never returns, and the family is notified that he fell into a ravine whilst drunk and died.

His father’s struggle with sobriety deeply affected his character because, throughout the series, Nolan realizes just how much his father struggled to change and, in the end, it still wasn’t enough.

9 He Has A Symbolic Name

Before becoming Prince Charming, he was born David Nolan. He was given a Hebrew name that means “beloved.” Furthermore, his origins with a shepherd family is a reference to the Bible character, King David.

King David’s narrative follows a humble shepherd who becomes an anointed king by God. As a child, he went up against the giant Goliath and defeated him. King David’s exploits parallel David Nolan’s story in many ways.

8 His Name Becomes Even More Symbolic Name

David Nolan becomes associated with another symbolic name: his twin brother, James. The Nolans give away David’s brother, James, to the royal family in exchange for much-needed money. James then goes to live with the royal family and becomes a prince.

The name “James” means “supplanter,” which is indicative of how David eventually supplants his brother after the latter’s death to save his mother’s farm. He is then forced to marry the daughter of King Midas, thus continuing the charade as James.

7 Originally Killed Off Early

Prince Charming is seen throughout the entire series. However, he was originally supposed to be killed off in the first episode. When the Hollywood Reporter asked him what the best piece of constructive criticism he ever received was, creator Edward Kitsis said that, “When ABC greenlighted the pilot for Once Upon a Time, their biggest note — and it was dead-on — was that Prince Charming should live.”

He saves his daughter Emma and his story is explored throughout the various timelines during the series.

6 Gives Away His Father’s Steed

David meets Joan when she suddenly appears on his family farm and, as it turns out, she is the fiancee of an acquaintance in Arendelle. Joan becomes a close friend and mentor who helps train David to fight against the warlord, Bo Peep when she threatens their farm.

After David wins against Bo Peep, he gifts his father’s steed to Joan to help her escape. It is a growing moment for David because he is letting go of his past to go forward.

5 His Mother’s Name Is Also Symbolic

David isn’t the only person in his family to have a symbolic name. His mother, Ruth, is named after King David’s great grandmother. In the Bible, Ruth is portrayed as a strong woman who helps her mother-in-law, Naomi, escape persecution.

In the series, Ruth is fiercely protective of her son and her family. She ends up being hit by a poisoned arrow by one of King George’s men in the crossfire of battle. Before she dies, she witnesses her son marry the love of his life.

4 He Has Quite The Family Tree

Despite his humble beginnings, David Nolan becomes part of an extensive family tree. He and Snow White have two children, Emma and Neal. He then becomes a grandfather when Emma has two children: a daughter, Hope, with Killian Jones (a.k.a Captain Hook) and Henry with Neal Cassidy (a.k.a Baelfire).

Nolan then becomes blessed with a great-grandchild when Henry marries Jacinda Vidrio (a.k.a Cinderella) and has a daughter named Lucy.

3 Almost Didn’t Marry Snow White

Throughout the series, one of Prince Charming’s goals is to reunite with his beloved, Snow White. However, he almost didn’t marry her. After he takes his brother’s place, he defeats a dragon for King Midas. The King is so impressed that he promises his daughter, Abigail’s, hand in marriage.

As it turns out, both parties are in love with other people. Abigail is in love with a man named Frederik, who was turned into gold because of her father’s curse. Charming decides to help Abigail to be with Frederik.

2 Spearheads The Creation Of A New Society

When measures are taken to protect Storybrooke from the Dark Curse, all of the inhabitants return to their original personas. David Nolan decides to take charge to retake their realm. He becomes the leader of a war council and reunites a large group of characters that he simultaneously protects and rallies to their cause.

Nolan is constantly demonstrating that he is a born leader who will do anything to reclaim his rightful place.

1 Has A Basis In Actual Fairytale

Like most of the characters on Once Upon A Time, David Nolan’s character is based on fairytale characters. He is based on Snow White’s Prince Charming, as well as Tom Canty from The Prince And The Pauper.

The stories are juxtaposed in his storylines throughout the film. He is Snow White’s husband and the one who gives her true love’s kiss. However, with The Prince and The Pauper, that storyline is shown when he takes his royal brother’s place.
