The beloved series Once Upon a Time is a show filled with love and hope. One character who exemplified these traits well was Robin Hood (Sean Maguire), for his wife Marian (Christie Laing), his children, and specifically Regina Mills (Lana Parilla), his prophecied true love. Robin Hood, like in his legend, steals from the rich to give to the poor. Since this TV show had the space and time, Robin Hood’s occupation is given some backstory. The audience comes to understand him and see him grow throughout the show as he faces challenge after challenge with the rest of the heroes.

10 Recast After Season 2

Though played by Tom Ellis in season 2, when the audience sees Robin Hood in the next season, he is played by Sean Maguire. Since his role in season 2’s “Lacey” is only a flashback, it was easy for Maguire to slip into being a newly-important character.

Maguire played Robin Hood until his death at the end of season five. He last appeared to Regina in a dream.

9 Has Two Children

Robin Hood has two children by the events of season five, his son Roland (Raphael Alejandro) with his wife Marian, and his daughter Margot with Zelena (Rebecca Mader).

Roland and Robin both enjoy rocky road ice cream, shown when he buys his family treats at Any Given Sundae. In the series finale, Margot (Tiera Skovbye) is revealed to be engaged to Alice (Rose Reynolds).

8 Regina’s True Love

In the backstory, before the First Curse was cast, Tinker Bell (Rose McIver) helps Regina find her true love, at that time only recognized because of his lion tattoo. It’s only later that Regina sees his face and realizes he is Robin Hood. Throughout the rest of the show, he and Regina form a loving relationship.

In season five, the couple is looking forward to a happy future together when they try to stop Hades (Greg Germann) and Robin is killed in the attempt.

7 Killed by Hades

Towards the end of season five, Hades is trying to convince Zelena to use the Olympian crystal so the two of them can take over Storybrooke, and Robin and Regina overhear the conversation and try to save his daughter.

However, he ends up giving his life to protect Regina, as Hades kills him with the Olympian crystal. After his death, Zelena tells Regina that their daughter will be named Robin in honor of him.

6 His Occupation is Given a Reason

In the backstory shown throughout season three, Robin Hood is a thief until he meets Marian and falls in love. After they marry, they open a tavern together and it’s only after Robin is threatened by the Sherriff of Nottingham for taxes that he is convinced to begin to steal again.

He defies the Sherriff and starts to steal from the rich for the poor. Marian agrees to this as long as she can stay with him.

5 His Tattoo is a Lion Rampant

Tinker Bell and Regina don’t see Robin’s face when they go to the tavern to find Regina’s true love. Therefore, the only distinguishing mark is his lion tattoo. If one looks closely, it can be seen that the tattoo is specifically a lion rampant on a shield, or a lion rearing back on its back legs.

Its tongue is also visible. The lion rampant is a common motif in medieval heraldry in both the real world and the Enchanted Forest. King George, Prince Charming, and King Arthur are all shown to use this motif in some form.

4 First Person to Investigate the Wicked Witch’s Curse

In season four, Robin Hood and his Merry Men are the first to see Little John transform into a flying monkey. Therefore, Robin goes alone to investigate Zelena’s, or the Wicked Witch’s, house. While doing so, he accidentally fires an arrow at Regina, mistaking her for her sister.

He promptly apologizes and the two meet properly and proceed to investigate Zelena’s house together.

3 Allows Mulan To Join The Merry Men

In season three, Mulan helps Neal prepare the room to contact another realm: Neverland, with the help of Robin Hood’s son Roland. After Mulan shows her bravery, Robin requests that she join the Merry Men, even though she is a woman.

When she says she needs to ask someone first, he accepts that, suspecting this is someone she loves. She eventually accepts after Aurora announces her pregnancy and Mulan joins the ranks of the Merry Men.

2 Takes Over Rumpelstiltskin’s Castle

After the Dark Curse is broken, Robin Hood and his Merry Men take up residence at Rumpelstiltskin’s castle. When Neal and Mulan arrive, Robin allows them to look around after Neal reveals that he is Rumpelstiltskin’s son. Neal picks up his father’s walking stick and swings it, causing a hidden door to appear.

Robin comments that when he swung it, nothing happened, showing that the walking stick will only respond to those who are of Rumpelstiltskin’s blood. Neal then discovers a crystal ball that shows him Emma in Neverland.

1 Is Tricked by Zelena into Believing His Wife is Alive

In season 4, Marian is shown to be alive, and she bonds with her son and Robin in Storybrooke. However, she is actually Zelena in disguise. Robin is initially conflicted about his relationship with Regina after seeing his wife again. After thinking about all the sacrifices she’s made for him, he ultimately decides to be with Marian.

This is further complicated when Regina tells him that his real wife is dead, and “Marian” is Zelena in disguise. Zelena then reveals herself, and Robin must reassure Regina about her plans for her sister.
