Jamie Dornan has always been a master at charming audiences. Once Upon A Time is no exception as he played the charismatic fan-favorite character Sheriff Graham. In the Enchanted Forest, Graham was known as the Huntsman, but the Dark Curse prevented him from remembering this past life.
Fans were crushed by Graham’s sudden and heartbreaking death in the show’s first season. He returned in some flashbacks in later episodes and his memory lived on, but his death remains one of the show’s most tragic moments. While Graham is still a fan-favorite, there are still some details that fans don’t know about him, including the original vision that showrunners had for his character.
10 Graham Was Almost A Part Of Emma’s Time-Travel Adventure
The season 3 finale shows Emma and Hook accidentally time-traveling to the past. Showrunners Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis originally planned for the Huntsman to be part of this adventure. He was supposed to be one of Regina’s guards, which would’ve made sense given that the Huntsman was already under her control at this point in the past timeline.
Horowitz and Kitsis wanted Emma to see Graham when she was locked up in Regina’s castle, creating a gut-wrenching moment where Emma would’ve wanted to reach out to him, yet he’d have no idea who she was. Since Jaime Dornan was busy shooting Fifty Shades of Grey, this opportunity never came to fruition.
9 The Star Who Almost Played The Role Of Graham
When originally casting for the show, Adam Horowitz wanted Sean Maguire to test out for a specific role. Maguire never ended up testing for the part as he was offered a role in a different show.
He revealed that the Once Upon A Time role Horowitz wanted him to test out for went to Jamie Dornan instead. Of course, Sean Maguire later became a major part of the show by playing the important role of Robin Hood.
8 The Sheriff Was Originally Going To Be Sherlock Holmes
Edward Kitsis revealed that Storybrooke’s sheriff was originally going to be Sherlock Holmes. His curse would be that he would be a brilliant detective trapped in a town where there was never any mystery.
Kitsis and Horowitz were unable to get the rights for the Sherlock Holmes character. Instead of a cursed Sherlock Holmes, the sheriff became a cursed version of the Huntsman from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
7 A Fan Of Pixie Sticks
In the original script for the pilot episode, Sheriff Graham is an avid fan of pixie sticks. When Emma–who is known in the pilot script as Anna–first encounters Graham, he’s munching on pixie sticks and offers her one.
He admits that it’s a terrible habit and that he’s amazed that his teeth haven’t rotted through yet. The sugar fiend side of Graham never made it into the final version of the pilot or in any other episode of the series.
6 The Origin Of Graham’s Accent
Jamie Dornan has a distinctive Irish accent. In the original script for the pilot episode, the cursed Sheriff Graham claims that he was born and raised in Maine but that he picked up his accent from his parents.
This wouldn’t have been true as Graham is actually from the Enchanted Forest, but the Dark Curse prevents him from remembering that in the pilot episode. In the final version of the pilot and all of the other episodes, there is never any backstory given in regards to Graham’s accent.
5 Emma Never Found Out That Regina Killed Him
All Once Upon A Time fans remember the devastating moment when Regina crushed Graham’s heart and killed him. What some fans don’t realize is that Emma never found out that Regina killed Graham.
Emma and Regina form a close friendship, along with co-parenting Henry and making incredible sacrifices for one another. Despite all of this progress, Emma never learns the truth, and it’s something that neither she nor Regina ever discuss to fully reconcile with before the end of the series.
4 Emma Wore His Shoelace On Her Wrist After He Died
After Graham’s death, Emma can be seen wearing one of the shoelaces from Graham’s boot around her wrist. This was an intentional choice made by Jennifer Morrison and the fact that her character Emma had grown up in the foster care system. Morrison read numerous memoirs written by people who had grown up in the foster care system.
Many of these authors mentioned that they held onto small and significant objects as a form of remembrance. Morrison wanted Emma to hold onto an object like that after losing someone so important to her character. Jamie Dornan and Morrison came up with the idea of the shoelace that Emma would wear around her wrist.
3 He Was Raised By Wolves
Before he became the Huntsman, the character was raised by wolves. This upbringing makes him a rare individual that fans meet, someone who is a deadly hunter while also feeling deep compassion for all animals.
After killing his prey, Graham can be seen crying as he feels deep sorrow for the life he has taken, yet he knows the kill is necessary for survival. Others in the Enchanted Forest struggle to understand how Graham can be a formidable hunter and also someone who weeps over the death of an animal.
2 Graham Helped Storybrooke’s Animal Sanctuary
Graham’s affinity with animals also translated to his cursed life in Storybrooke. After his death, Mr. Gold retrieves a box of Graham’s belongings from his apartment and shows them to Emma.
In the box is a newspaper clipping showing that Graham helped organize a charity fundraiser for an animal shelter in Storybrooke. Even when he’s cursed, Graham continues to exhibit a tremendous amount of compassion toward animals and those in need.
1 His Last Name Is A Nod To Disney’s Classic Snow White Film
Sheriff Graham’s last name is never stated in the show, but it can be seen in the box of belongings that Mr. Gold retrieves from Graham’s apartment after his death.
Graham’s last name is Humbert, which is a nod to the Huntsman in Disney’s classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs film. The Huntsman was known as Humbert in some publicity materials for the film and Graham was the Huntsman in the Enchanted Forest.
