One Day at a Time is officially canceled after four seasons. In a reimagination of the 1970s series of the same name, the critically acclaimed sitcom centered around three generations of a Cuban-American family. One Day at a Time followed newly single mom and US Army Nurse Corps veteran Penelope Alvarez (Justina Machado) as she raised her two kids with the help of her mother (Rita Moreno) and landlord (Todd Grinnell). The series was often praised for its modern portrayal of serious social issues and difficult topics, such as immigration, racism, PTSD, sexual identity, and homophobia.

However, despite its critical praise and four Emmy nominations, the show hit some rough patches since its premiere on Netflix in 2017. After three seasons, One Day at a Time was abruptly canceled in 2019. Fans were in an uproar over the cancellation, even launching an online campaign to save the show with the help of some celebrity fans such as Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. A few months after it was axed at Netflix, One Day at a Time was renewed for a fourth season on Pop TV. The show’s fourth season premiered on its new home network in March 2020, but after only airing six episodes, the show was brought to a halt in April due to the coronavirus pandemic. Though an animated special aired in June, One Day at a Time was in danger of facing cancelation again as it struggled to bring in viewership. Last month, it was announced that the series was canceled by Pop TV after four seasons, but that Sony Pictures Television was searching for a new network to pick it up.

However, Sony TV was not able to find a third home for One Day at a Time. Co-showrunners Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce both took to Twitter to announce that their series will not be returning for a fifth season. “It’s officially over. There will be no new One Day at a Time episodes,” Calderon Kellett wrote. “But there will always be 46 episodes that we got to make that live forever.” Royce wrote, “I wish we could say otherwise, but sadly, ODAAT’s time has come to an end.” See Calderon Kellett and Royce’s tweets in the space below.

It’s officially over. There will be no new @OneDayAtATime episodes. But there will always be 46 episodes that we got to make that live FOREVER. Thank you to this beautiful cast. Our dedicated crew. Calderon Kellett made efforts back in August to save the show before its cancellation, urging fans on Twitter to rewatch the fourth season when it aired on CBS in the fall so it could be renewed for season 5. However, the animated special that aired in June, titled “The Politics Episode,” officially went down as the final episode of One Day at a Time.

The official ending of One Day at a Time is sad news for fans, who have loyally rallied behind the show since its first cancellation. Though ViacomCBS, the owner of Pop TV, heavily promoted the series, it’s been doomed to face cancellation for a while. It’s sad to see such a culturally relevant and meaningful sitcom end, but at least fans will have four good seasons to look back on.
