Titans Finally Admits Donnas Season 2 Death Was Terrible

Titans season 3 apologizes for how Donna Troy was killed off, subtly admitting her death was less than spectacular. The debut of Nightwing, the battles against Deathstroke, Krypto the Dog… Titans’ sophomore run certainly didn’t lack highlights. The death of Donna Troy, however, wasn’t one of them. Fresh from their first uplifting victory as a new-look team, the Titans came crashing down to Earth in season 2’s finale, watching helplessly as an electricity pylon came crashing down on Donna’s head. Wonder Girl withstood the weight while carnival bystanders and Dove fled to safety, but the tower’s pulsing electricity left the superhero sizzling.

What was probably intended as an emotional ending to Titans season 2 ended up triggering a titanic amount of controversy. Donna maybe could’ve knocked the falling tower aside with her super strength and avoided electrocution altogether, and even if catching it was the only option, would an electrical current really cut through Donna’s Amazonian endurance? She’s been damn near immortal in DC comics, after all. Even ignoring the method of her demise, Wonder Girl’s final scene still felt rushed, undeserved and unnecessary, which Titans made worse by immediately hinting she’d be resurrected the following season.

Conor Leslie reprises her role in Titans season 3’s “Souls,” reuniting with fellow writer’s room victim, Hank Hall. Together with lifelong Robin fan Tim Drake, the unlucky trio find their way back to mortal lands, with Hank staying behind so Donna and Tim may depart. Along the way, however, Donna effectively admits her season 2 death scene was terrible. Chatting with Hank at the Twilight Owl, Donna breaks down, saying, “you think I’m happy with how I went out?” before continuing, “I died at a carnival Hank… a carnival!” Arriving in the afterlife, Titans’ Wonder Girl apparently spent a long time wrestling with her lackluster final moments, wishing she could’ve gone out saving the world from an asteroid or something equally dramatic.

Titans finally validates how fans felt when the credits rolled on season 2’s finale – because Donna herself felt exactly the same way. She’s angry at how her end was so sudden and anti-climactic, and truly believed she’d go out in more heroic fashion. The “a carnival, Hank!” line even acknowledges how Donna’s death was even a little embarrassing for a superhero of her stature and ability. A barely hidden anger in her voice echoes the sentiments Wonder Girl’s fans had when she was left unfairly frazzled somewhere between Hook a Duck and Balloon Dart. Though Conor Leslie delivers the lines as Donna Troy, it’s impossible not to read a meta meaning between them. As Donna’s complaint gets more and more impassioned, the dialogue feels like Titans holding its hands up and admitting season 2’s climactic death scene was a goof.

With Donna Troy now back among the living, it was vital Titans address the elephant in the room. Simply bringing Wonder Girl back to life wasn’t enough to erase those lingering memories of collapsing limply onto the fallen electricity tower, but by tacitly addressing the error, Donna’s sorry ordeal can be put to bed. Titans’ apology couldn’t have been clearer if Donna turned to the camera and offered the audience flowers and chocolate.

More important than simply admitting Donna’s death wasn’t great or identifying with fan disappointment, Titans demonstrated lessons were learned when killing off Hank earlier in season 3. His demise played out infinitely better than the last time a main character was killed off.
