One Piece Finally Revealed Kings Epic Origin and Appearance

Warning: spoilers for One Piece chapter #1035

The mystery behind King the Wildfire has finally been revealed in One Piece’s latest chapter. During the fierce battle with Zoro, King’s mask has been ripped apart and readers could finally get a look at his face, besides a small glimpse into the past of this enigmatic character, including his relationship with Kaidou.

King was introduced for the first time in chapter #920 of the manga. He is one of the top officers (called All-Stars) of the Beasts Pirates, and the right-hand man of their leader, the fearsome Kaidou. King’s real appearance remained largely unknown because he is always clad in a dark uniform that shows no skin. Some significant physical features, namely a pair of large, black wings and flames naturally burning on his back, pointed to King belonging to a non-human race, which was later revealed to be the near-extinct Lunarians. Until now, however, his face and his connection with Kaidou remained a mystery.

With the “Wano Arc” approaching its end, the fight between the Straw Hats and the Beasts Pirates is reaching a climax. While captain Luffy is taking on Kaidou himself, the two remaining All-Star, King and Queen, have been engaged by the two top fighters among the Straw Hats, Zoro and Sanji. The beginning of chapter #1035 sees Sanji finally dispatching Queen, before the scene moves to Zoro’s fights. He had trouble fighting King until now because, besides a set of destructive powers deriving from his Devil Fruit, the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Pteranodon his opponent showed extreme resilience and the ability to produce and manipulate flames. King’s natural abilities are due to his Lunarian heritage. His race, now extinct, was considered godlike in the ancient past, and his crewmate Queen describes them as “monsters that can survive in any environment”. However, Zoro finally figured out a way to counter these abilities, and with his first clean strike of the fight managed to cut off King’s mask.

King’s face is that of a regular human, the only distinguishing features being his white hair and dark brown skin – apparently shared by all Lunarians. He also has a peculiar, prominent tattoo surrounding his left eye, whose significance remains undisclosed. The most interesting details on the character, however, were revealed in a brief flashback where King reminisces about his first meeting with Kaidou. Both were prisoners in a World Government facility. This was likely one of the recorded eighteen times that Kaidou has been captured by the Marine and managed to escape, but during this breakout, he met a young Lunarian boy named Arber, who was being experimented upon to test his endurance. Impressed by his potential, Kaidou invited the boy to be the first member of his pirate crew, giving him the name “King” in recognition of his power. Arber/King was impressed by Kaidou’s declared intent of “changing the world” and the two left together, forming an unbreakable bond. This long-term connection explains why King is given a lot of leeway by Kaidou. For example, King personally engaged Big Mom and her crew to keep them from entering Wano despite not being ordered to do so by his captain, who did not punish or reprimand him even when he voiced his opposition to the Kaidou-Big Mom pirate alliance.

Chapter #1035 revealed new details about King’s past, but there are still a lot of questions to be answered, for example why Lunarians are so feared and coveted by the World Government, or the significance of the tattoo, which King already possessed as a young boy. Mysteries such as this one are one of the reasons why One Piece is one of the best-selling manga in history, capturing the imagination of millions of readers around the world.
