Netflix’s live-action One Piece show hints at a connection to the manga with a new script image. The Japanese series began in 1997 with the story of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy who accidentally eats a Devil Fruit and becomes rubberlike as a result. Luffy wants to become the King of the Pirates, so he employs a crew known as the Straw Hat Pirates to help him find the title treasure and achieve his goal. Though One Piece started out small, it’s since grown into a major franchise comprised of animated films, video games, and a wildly popular anime series.

Considering the manga’s success, it didn’t come as too much of a surprise when development began on a live-action One Piece show in 2017. However, it’s taken a while to get off the ground. It wasn’t until January 2020 that Netflix ordered a ten-episode season 1 of the series. Updates have been few and far between since then due to a pandemic-related production delay. One Piece was finally able to resume work in March 2021 and just recently shared the official logo for the show, which appears to draw inspiration from the manga.

Now, it seems this reference to the original series is far from a one-off. On the official One Piece Twitter account, Netflix shared an image of a script from the first episode of the live-action show. The premiere is titled “Romance Dawn.” This is likely a reference to the manga, as “Romance Dawn” was the title of Eiichiro Oda’s original set of two one-shot stories. It’s also the title of One Piece’s first volume. Check out the image of the script below:

Combined with the logo reveal, it’s clear Netflix’s One Piece series won’t shy away from connections and references to the original manga. This should come as a relief to those who love the franchise and are worried about the live-action show’s ability to maintain the spirit of the manga. It’s still very early in the production process, but there’s hope the series will honor the manga any way it can, and the episode 1 title is a positive sign this will happen.

It’s smart for those behind the live-action series to make these choices with the premiere name and logo. It’s an easy way to get fans of the original manga excited about the show if they weren’t already. Hopefully, Netflix will reveal more connections to One Piece’s origins as production on the live-action series continues.
