One Piece The Reason Why Zoros Katana Emits The Presence of Oden

Warning! Spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1002 below.

Despite numerous attacks from the five members of the Worst Generation fighting Kaido, only Zoro becomes close to actually dealing considerable damage to him. Set in a world of sailing and piracy, Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece features a lot of sword fights and hand to hand combat. Roronoa Zoro, a fan favorite main character, practices Santoryu, a sword style that uses three swords. His passion for enhancing his sword skills dates back to his childhood. Back then, he has convinced himself that the more swords he uses, the stronger he actually is. Obviously, such an attempt only leads to him being defeated by Kuina. He has then decided to lessen the number of swords he uses to three, which is still a lot.

Practicing Santoryu requires Zoro to at least have three swords in his possession. These swords, however, can’t be mediocre. During the Arlong Park Arc, Zoro breaks normal swords simply by using them once. Given that he has become a lot stronger since then, he also requires better swords. When Dracule Mihawk, one of the series’ strongest characters, has fought with Zoro, two of their original katanas are destroyed. He then buys new ones at Loguetown. That’s where he acquires two of his named swords: Yubashiri and Sandai Kitetsu. After the owner of the shop sees Zoro defeating Sandai Kitetsu’s curse, he decides to pass on Yubashiri, his family heirloom to him. However, Yubashiri is eventually destroyed and gets replaced by Shusui, a said national treasure of Wano Country.

When Zoro uses Flying Dragon Blaze to cut Kaido, Kaido feels Oden’s presence within his blade. This is simply because Enma, one of the swords Zoro is currently using, is originally owned by Kozuki Oden. Not only that, it’s one of the only two weapons known to have injured the tanky Kaido. Zoro manages to get his hand on Enma when Kozuki Hiyori, Oden’s daughter, exchanges it for Shusui to remain in Wano.

Before Kaido even detects Oden’s aura during Zoro’s attack, Big Mom has already sensed that something is wrong with Zoro’s sword. Even though she can’t pinpoint it, she warns Kaido to watch out for Zoro’s attack. Indeed, Enma being a powerful sword isn’t just a title. Enma has a unique trait of draining its user’s Armament Haki, which allows it to cut extensively. However, it’s also noted that there’s a possibility of taming Enma and forcing the Haki to flow back into the sword. Once this is achieved, Enma may increase in grade.

Given that Luffy, Law, Kid, and Killer combined are having a hard time fighting Kaido, Enma proves to be a trump card for this battle. Since One Piece also has a knack of giving power-ups to characters midbattle, there’s a chance that Zoro will force Haki back to Enma, albeit for a short period of time. If this does happen, then Zoro, using Oden’s sword, may just settle the score between Oden and Kaido.
