For two seasons, fans of Sex Education everywhere have clamored for Otis Milburn to end up with Maeve Wiley. Their relationship and “will they/won’t they” dynamic has been the driving force of the popular Netflix series and thanks to a season 2 cliffhanger, viewers were hoping they’d finally get together in season 3.

However, something unexpected happened. Otis began dating Ruby Matthews, the girl he lost his virginity to. Though they had differing personalities, their romance for a handful of episodes has become hugely popular, with it blowing up on Twitter and Reddit. It has caused fans to wonder which relationship is actually superior.

10 Maeve & Otis: They Connected Instantly

The entire series is built around Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Maeve (Emma Mackey) joining forces to run a sex therapy clinic at school. Though it starts as just a business, the audience can tell that Maeve and Otis immediately connected on a different level than either of them ever expected.

A small scene that points to this is when Maeve says, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Eric incorrectly said it was Kelly Clarkson, prompting Maeve and Otis to both say it was actually a Nietzsche quote. Maeve smiled slightly, realizing this is someone she can connect with. Each of the earliest season 1 episodes has evidence of their quick bond.

9 Ruby & Otis: They Were Happy Together

Due to the will they/won’t they angle, Otis and Maeve have mostly been through hardships and heartbreak. They haven’t actually been a couple yet, so it’s hard to really know how that will work out. Meanwhile, Otis and Ruby (Mimi Keene) got the opportunity to date for several episodes.

During that time, the two were clearly happy. Things started rocky with Otis basically being her lap dog but once he stood up to her and asked her to be his girlfriend, things changed. Otis got to be himself and Ruby accepted it, even hanging out and having a good time with his friends. Their double date at the bowling alley is one of the show’s happiest moments.

8 Maeve & Otis: They Bring Out The Best In Each Other

Otis and Maeve are certainly far from perfect people but they’re typically at their best when they’re with each other. Maeve is a closed-off and prideful person who doesn’t really let people help her. Yet, Otis is often there for her and has helped her become a more open and honest person.

Otis starts the series as a timid guy wanting to sit in the background and go unnoticed. Once he starts hanging out with Maeve, he realizes that’s not what he wants and he actually enjoys helping people. Therapy might be his calling, as he discussed with his mother in the season 3 finale, and he might not have found it without Maeve.

7 Ruby & Otis: Their Communication Is Far Better

The biggest roadblock that keeps getting in the way of Otis and Maeve being together is communication. The two never seem to say what they’re actually feeling. Maeve was on the verge of laying out her feelings in season 2, only to go with an insult instead. Otis did something similar and they also barely even spoke after their long-awaited kiss.

Right off the bat, Otis and Ruby communicate better. Even though it’s mean, Ruby admits she’s embarrassed by Otis, who responded with his own feelings about their relationship. After things went south following Otis not saying “I love you, too,” Ruby needed time to process and then invited him over for a talk. It ended poorly but they at least talked about things.

6 Maeve & Otis: The Romantic Gestures Are Bigger

Eric called Otis the most romantic person he knows and that is most clear when he’s around Maeve. The first instance came when he waited for her after her abortion despite her being mean to him beforehand and walking her home. Otis continued to do big things for Maeve.

He chose to help her instead of going on a birthday trip with Eric, he left her an emotional voicemail about his feelings for her, and he gave her the perfect birthday gift to show he truly knows her. Maeve also opened up romantically to him and kept his sweater under her pillow.

5 Ruby & Otis: Their Chemistry Is Unmatched

The main thing that a lot of fans have pointed to after watching season 3 is that Ruby and Otis had electric chemistry. Part of the reason the penultimate episode of season 2 is arguably the show’s best is the side story involving Ruby and Otis as they went to get the morning-after pill following their hookup.

The two had a great conversation and fans wanted more of Ruby and Otis. They got it in season 3 and the two stole every scene they were in. They came across like two people genuinely attracted to each other and happy to be in each other’s company. Some fans even feel they showed more chemistry in four episodes than Otis and Maeve have in three seasons.

4 Maeve & Otis: They’re Great Friends

Things like respect, trust, and support are incredibly important in a romantic relationship. A lot of those aspects are first developed if the couple starts out as friends, which Otis and Maeve did. The two were quick friends while running the clinic together and are great friends.

Just look at how either of them reacts when something good happens for the other. They’re quick to say they’re proud of them and that they deserve it. The friendship that they have makes their bond stronger and would be a huge asset to them if they ever had a legitimate romance.

3 Ruby & Otis: Ruby Opened Up With Otis

For most of the first two seasons, Ruby was a background player. She was a member of “The Untouchables” and was Moordale’s resident mean girl. Outside of a season 1 episode with a story alongside her friend Olivia, Ruby didn’t get a chance to shine until she slept with Otis and he found out a little more about her background.

In season 3, audiences got to learn even more about Ruby. They saw the veil drop when she looked legitimately giddy that Otis wanted to be her boyfriend. Most importantly, they saw her let Otis into her home life and meet her father, which is something she hid from everyone else. Though they broke up, Ruby grew opened up enough to let her best friends into her home afterward and then was the one to physically stand up to Hope in the end, showing more growth.

2 Maeve & Otis: They Love Each Other More Than Anyone Else

If Maeve wasn’t around, there’s a good chance that Otis would’ve said that he loved Ruby. The same thing that plagued them was a major issue for Otis and Ola, which is that Otis loves Maeve more than he does anyone else. What he felt for Maeve couldn’t be matched by Ola or Ruby.

On the other side, Maeve’s relationship with Jackson in season 1 was hampered by the fact that he understood she loved Otis and not him. Though Maeve formed a close bond with Isaac in season 3, as soon as Otis came back into the picture, she was confused and was seemingly leaning towards him.

1 Ruby & Otis: They Were So Good That Fans Turned On Otis/Maeve

One of the more universally liked ships online is that of Otis and Maeve. When they didn’t get together at the end of season 2, fans were upset and also hated Isaac’s character for getting in the way. There were some Ruby/Otis shippers but it was a smaller group since they hadn’t done much together.

However, after season 3, the Otis/Ruby ship has grown. Some fans have even shared memes and tweets about how they’re over Otis/Maeve and that it’s not on the level of Ruby/Otis. The pairing of Otis and Ruby turned out to be so good that some viewers didn’t even feel any excitement at Otis and Maeve finally kissing.
