Jenji Kohan’s masterpiece, Orange is the new Black centers around the lack of justice in the prison system. Although it is a series about criminal punishment, one of the main themes throughout OITNB is romance.

Kohan’s Netflix series does an excellent job creating romantic relationships that we find ourselves fully invested in, as they keep us constantly wanting more. One of the big love triangles throughout the show is between Alex, Piper, and Larry. Who is better suited for Piper? Is it Larry or is it Alex? Read on to find out.

10 LARRY OFFERS MORE STABILITY FOR PIPER

When we think of great romances, the word “stability” often fails to cross our minds. Romeo and Juliet didn’t give a hoot about stability. Neither did Mark Antony and Cleopatra. But in the real world, when it comes to everyday life, stability does matter in a relationship.

It provides security and safety that cannot be beat. In reality, a relationship will constantly be on the rocks if it does not have any form of stability and Larry is able to offer that for Piper in ways that Alex simply cannot. This is one of the reasons why Larry might be best suited for Piper.

9 ALEX FULFILLS MORE OF PIPER’S NEEDS

While Larry might be able to offer Piper tiled bathroom floors and marble countertops, Alex is able to offer Piper the fiery passion that she has always craved so much. For Pipes, nothing beats the thrill of a relationship that is constantly playing with fire.

Her character craves chaos, and Larry is unable to provide that chaotic lifestyle for Piper. Alex can, and her passionate persona makes Piper feel alive in a way that she has never felt before. The way Alex makes Piper feel is enough to give Alex the point on this one.

8 LARRY BRINGS OUT PIPER’S HEALTHY SIDE

As romantic as Piper and Alex’s relationship is, it is also extremely unhealthy. Throughout the series, they go behind each other’s backs and rat each other out in order to gain power. Relationships can’t last if they are filled with such a hefty amount of deceit and lies, and this is why Larry is able to bring out Piper’s healthier side as opposed to Alex.

Larry doesn’t play games with Piper and he seems to fit more into the conventional adult lifestyle as opposed to Alex. When Piper is with Larry, she seems like a mature adult. But this doesn’t necessarily mean she is happier with Larry compared to how she feels with Alex, which leads us to our next point.

7 ALEX LETS PIPER BE HER MOST AUTHENTIC SELF

Although Larry likes Piper for her rebellious ways, there are some traits to her personality that he is simply unwilling to accept. Her adventurous persona does not always mesh well with Larry’s lifestyle. Alex, on the other hand, is willing to let Piper be her most authentic self.

Piper never feels as though she has to pretend around Alex, and that is necessary for any relationship. It is important to find someone who you feel as though you can be fully honest with, and Piper feels 100% honest with Alex about who she truly is.

6 LARRY IS MORE INTERESTED IN HAVING A COMMITTED RELATIONSHIP

It seems as though Larry is more willing to have a conventional monogamous relationship with Piper as opposed to Alex. Yes, Larry ended up with Polly, but this perhaps would not have occurred if Piper didn’t cheat on Larry with Alex. It seems as though Larry desires something more stable that lasts a lifetime while Alex, on the other hand, doesn’t seem so sure.

Even in the final season, Alex is cheating on Piper and vice versa. It takes Alex some time to figure out what it is that she actually wants, yet in the end, she knows that all she wants is Piper.

5 ALEX IS MORE SUITABLE FOR PIPER’S UNCONVENTIONAL LIFESTYLE

Piper is a wild child at heart. She is in love with not knowing what the future holds and she wants her life to be filled with excitement and adventure. Alex is able to offer Piper this excitement and adventure in a way that Larry simply cannot.

If Piper was with Larry, she would most likely feel extremely unfulfilled. Alex fits more into the category of Piper’s deepest desires and that is why Alex and Piper are probably best suited for each other when it comes to Pipes getting her personal needs met.

4 LARRY MIGHT BE BETTER SUITED FOR THE LONG RUN

Larry is the more practical option out of the two. He never got messed up in the drug business (as far as we know) and he isn’t addicted to danger in the way that Alex seems to be. In the long run, Larry is more suitable of a partner for Piper than Alex. He can provide for Piper without taking illegal actions in order to do it.

Down the road, it is unclear whether or not Alex and Piper will be able to make things work. Where can we see their relationship going five years from now? What about ten years? Twenty? it’s impossible to know but we certainly hope things work out for those two.

3 ALEX HAS BEEN THROUGH EVERYTHING WITH PIPER

It’s always good to have a partner who you have a deep history with. This way, you will have already experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly with that special person. You’ve seen them at their darkest hour and you’ve been able to help them through it.

Alex and Piper have been through unimaginable events together and that means they can understand each other’s pasts in a way that Larry could never understand.

2 LARRY CAN TAKE CARE OF PIPER IN WAYS ALEX CANNOT

It’s hard to imagine Alex properly taking care of Piper, simply due to the fact that Alex can hardly take care of herself. Larry doesn’t feel the need to seek danger and adventure as much as Alex does, and he wants to lead a simple life where he can take care of his partner.

Alex Vause will need to work on herself before she can properly help Piper and take care of her. We think she will eventually get to that place for Piper, but it will take some time and hard work.

1 ALEX UNDERSTANDS PIPER MORE THAN LARRY DOES

And finally, it’s clear that Alex is able to understand Piper in ways that Larry never can. As stated previously, Alex and Piper have been through everything together. In prison, they have experienced the same amount of suffering and pain and it changed them both as individuals.

Once you’ve been through that much with another person, you begin to understand them in ways that no one else in the world can even attempt to understand. This is why, when it comes down to it, Alex is better suited for Piper and her needs.
