Original Zuko Actor Was In Talks To Consult On LiveAction Last Airbender Show

Dante Basco, who portrayed fan-favorite Prince Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender, was once a minor consultant on the beloved animated series’ upcoming live-action adaptation. Basco’s performance as Zuko received critical acclaim throughout the series’ original run, and many fans consider Zuko’s redemption arc to be a masterpiece of storytelling, as well as one of the most compelling aspects of Avatar. Basco himself has remained a consistent figure within the Avatar fan community, regularly making appearances at cons and engaging with fans online.

Back in 2018, Netflix announced that they were creating a live-action remake of The Last Airbender. Given how few animated series are successful in their transition to live-action, many were worried about how Netflix’s adaptation would turn out. However, Avatar creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were heavily involved with the series and were set to serve as co-showrunners. After the initial announcement, almost no new news was revealed about the series for nearly an entire year. The next big piece of information that was revealed was a gut punch for fans: both DiMartino and Konietzko would be stepping down as showrunners and exiting the adaptation. Without the input of any creatives from the original series, many wondered if Netflix could still provide a faithful adaptation of the source material.

In a recent interview with EW, Basco further spoke about his limited involvement with the live-action adaptation. Basco had previously revealed that he had spoke to DiMartino and Konietzko about Netflix’s adaptation while the duo were still actively working on it. However, the extent of his involvement was never known. Basco revealed that he was “never fully involved” with the adaptation, but was serving as some sort of consult. Basco also stated that he would still like to be involved with Netflix’s adaptation one day, but nothing was set in stone. Check out his full comment down below:

Who knows, down the line I may be involved if it makes sense. So we’ll see what happens. I think like the rest of the fanbase, my fingers are crossed for the best stuff to happen with the project.

Having some sort of creative input from those involved with the original show wouldn’t simply serve as a symbolic gesture for the fans; many consider it necessary to portray the world of Avatar correctly. M. Night Shyamalan’s abysmal live-action feature adaptation of The Last Airbender is largely considered a complete failure by both critics and fans of the show, and many hoped Netflix’s adaptation would make up for Shyamalan’s film. The live-action The Last Airbender was heavily criticized for the changes it made from the series (even mispronouncing several main characters’ names), and it’s overall disjointed narrative. Both DiMartino and Konietzko were not involved with the film creatively, and any input they offered was actively ignored. Basco has also spoken negatively about the film in the past.

Given how heavily involved Basco is with the Avatar fan community, he would certainly be a positive influence on Netflix’s adaptation. He is keenly aware of why people love the animated show and continue to watch it to this day, and has also made an effort to remain close with the community. He even put together a virtual reunion panel that will air on January 9, 2021. However, without the involvement of DiMartino and Konietzko, the future of Basco’s role in the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation remains up in the air.
