Despite the unconventional nature of the 2021 Academy Awards ceremony, these Best Picture nominations show it’s been quite a year for movies.

With the Oscars set for April 25, the recently announced nominations have everyone thrilled and excited to see who will win the biggest prizes of the night. This year’s Oscars will be different, though, as the award ceremony was delayed from its usual February schedule and the eligibility process was modified to accommodate movies during the pandemic. With this accommodation, the Oscars are already setting groundbreaking records, as streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Studios dominated the nominations with their films and it looks like it will be a huge night for women and BIPOC representation.
Last year, Parasite deservingly won Best Picture, becoming the first international film to do so. This year’s Best Picture nominees were some of the best films of the year, ranging from several noteworthy biopics to beautifully crafted dramas. The competition is pretty heated, and the biggest question remains on which film will reign supreme with the most prestigious Oscar award.
8 Mank – 83%
Mank follows the story of Hollywood’s screenwriter, Herman J. Mankiewicz, or Mank. His real-life experiences inspired him to finish what would become one of Hollywood’s greatest films of all time, Citizen Kane. In doing so, the film also shows the beauty of Old Hollywood with the 1930s costumes, old classic movie studios, and black-and-white aesthetics during its time.
The biographical film has a fantastic cast that includes Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, and Lily Collins. Although the lowest-rated movie out of all the Best Picture nominees, Mank received a whopping 10 nominations, including Best Director for David Fincher, Best Actor for Oldman, and Best Supporting Actress for Seyfried.
7 The Trial Of The Chicago 7 – 90%
After a riot broke out at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the federal government charged seven defendants for inciting a riot and conspiracy. However, the Chicago 7 trial is nothing that anyone had ever seen before, as the defense faced an unfair and biased case in trying to fight for their innocence.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 was also noted for its relevancy to today’s political climate. Given a very talented ensemble cast portraying real-life individuals, Sacha Baron Cohen was considered the standout performance as Abbie Hoffman, which also earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The film received a total of six nominations, including Best Original Screenplay for Aaron Sorkin, whose screenplay is considered one of his best.
6 Promising Young Woman – 90%
Promising Young Woman focuses on a former medical student named Cassie, who seeks revenge for the death of her best friend. She lives a double life in which she catches men in their unforgivable acts when an opportunity arises that allows her to get justice.
Carey Mulligan gives one of the best performances in her career as she embodies the intelligent and vengeful Cassie. Her performance earned her the Best Actress nomination, with the possibility of her winning her first Oscar. With a total of five nominations, the Oscars will also be a big night for the director and writer, Emerald Fennell, nominated for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. As one of the two female directors nominated in the prestigious category, this moment marks the first time in history that more than one woman has been nominated in the category.
5 Nomadland – 94%
After an economic recession impacted businesses and people’s livelihood across the nation, a middle-aged woman ventures a journey across the United States and explores life as a nomad. Starring Frances McDormand and David Strathairn, the drama film is adapted from a novel by Jessica Bruder. With six Oscar nominations, Nomadland is one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year and mentioned as one of the best films of the year by several critics and film associations. The drama film is one of the favorites to win Best Picture.
McDormand’s performance is remarkable, and it earned her another Best Actress nomination at the Oscars. However, it will be a huge night for Chloé Zhao, earning a Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay nomination, both categories in which she is a clear frontrunner to win. Zhao has almost won every single Best Director award where she’s been nominated, including a Golden Globe. People will want to watch to see if she will become the second women to win this distinguished award and the first since Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2010.
4 Sound Of Metal – 96%
A musician is finally peaking in his growing career until he unexpectedly loses his hearing. With his career on hold, he joins a community of people with hearing loss and tries to adapt to his new surroundings, including learning sign language, as he works to get back to his old life. The movie stars Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke, and Paul Raci.
Sound of Metal showcases a powerful and memorizing story that beautifully represents people with hearing loss. Of course, Ahmed’s performance is fantastic and captivating, as he shows his character’s struggle yet motivation to learn. With his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor, Ahmed also becomes the first Muslim in history to be nominated in the category. The drama film received six Oscar nominations.
3 Judas And The Black Messiah – 96%
An FBI informant, William O’Neal infiltrates one of the Black Panther chapters in Illinois and follows the chapter’s popular leader, Fred Hampton. As moments uncover that led to Hampton’s unfortunate demise, O’Neal also becomes conflicted about his views between his job and the movement, as he grows closer to his colleagues and rises in power within the party.
With six Oscar nominations, Judas and the Black Messiah is one of the three biopics nominated for Best Picture this year and is one of the few films officially released during the extended eligibility period. The biographical movie is powerful and captures the political issues during its time, especially racial injustice. Both Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield captured their real-life figure’s essence and mannerisms beautifully and naturally. Their performances earned them nominations for Best Supporting Actor, with Kaluuya as the frontrunner to win.
2 Minari – 98%
Like any story about the American Dream, this Korean-American family moves to a farm in Arkansas in the hopes of creating a business to sell Korean vegetables. They soon learn that the American Dream is not easy, but they try to persevere as they try to keep their family together and eventually find success.
Directed and written by Lee Isaac Chung, Minari narrates a beautiful and heartwarming tale about the American Dream and a family’s ability to adapt to their new surroundings. Steven Yeun gives a brilliant performance as the family’s father figure, earning him his first Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Following a breathtaking performance as the Korean grandmother, Youn Yuh-Jung also received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The drama film earned six Oscar nominations.
1 The Father – 99%
This drama film follows the story of an elder who refuses help from his daughter. However, he soon loses his sense of reality, as he struggles with the symptoms of dementia, which only worsens his relationship with his daughter, leaving her in a complicated position and worrying about her father’s declining health.
The Father was one of a few under the radar movies this year, but it has been slowly gaining recognition since the award season started. The film highlights the struggles of dementia, showing its heartbreaking nature and the emotional impacts it can have on a family. The chemistry between Olivia Colman and Anthony Hopkins is impeccable, and they showcase a riveting performance as father and daughter. They both received Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actor, respectively and the film was nominated for a total of six Oscars.
