The Oscar nominations for 2021 were finally announced, and every movie buff is eagerly binging each nominated film in preparation for the most prestigious awards ceremony of the year, which will take place on April 25th. Of course, like every year, there are some clear front-runners that scored a bunch of nods.

More often than not, the biggest winners on the night are the ones who get nominated across plenty of different categories. 10 News Of The World (2020) – 4 Nominations

This action-adventure tale might be run-of-the-mill, but Tom Hanks leads News of the World and its trek into four Oscar nominations, for Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography.

This drama follows a Civil War veteran who travels hundreds of miles to take a young girl, who was kidnapped years earlier, back to her aunt and uncle. It ranks as an entertaining watch despite not scoring nominations in the most popular categories.

9 Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020) – 5 Nominations

This music drama has everyone talking about it, but mainly for the stunning and infatuating performances by Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman (both of whom received nominations). Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is also up for Best Achievement in Production Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Costume Design.

With Chadwick Boseman as a clear front-runner for the leading actor category, it’s time to check out this biopic that takes place in times of racial tensions, and tells the story of the “Mother of the Blues.”

8 Promising Young Woman (2020) – 5 Nominations

There’s a good chance that Promising Young Woman might be the most unique and thrilling on the list of nominees this year. Starring Carey Mulligan, this revenge-thriller is all a woman on a destructive path seeking revenge for sexual assault.

Directed by Emerald Fennell, this flick scored nominations for Best Director, Best Actress (for Mulligan), Best Achievement in Film Editing, Best Original Screenplay, and it’s up for Best Picture.

7 The Father (2021) – 6 Nominations

This drama follows an elderly man who refuses care from his daughter and dives deep into family and love. Both Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman scored a nomination, and the other four are for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Achievement in Film Editing, Production Design, and Best Picture.

The Father might be the lesser-known on this list, but it’s the underdog that’s in a six-way tie for the second most nominations of the year. It’s the perfect time to get check out this flick, at the very least, for the stunning performances.

6 Minari (2020) – 6 Nominations

Minari follows a Korean family who starts their own farm in the 1980s after moving to Arkansas. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, this deep and insightful drama is taking this year by storm.

Up for Best Actor (Steven Yeun), Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Youn Yuh-jung), Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Picture, Minari is a big hit at the Oscars. This unique flick is up for a whopping six nominations and deserves a watch.

5 Sound Of Metal (2020) – 6 Nominations

Another music drama is up for a lot of nominations, and Riz Ahmed blew everyone away with his leading role as a heavy-metal drummer. Sound of Metal follows his story and journey in his career as he begins to lose his hearing.

Ahmed is up for Best Actor, and Paul Raci is up for Best Supporting Actor. This flick is also nominated for Best Sound, Best Original Screenplay, Best Achievement in Sound Editing, and Best Picture.

4 The Trial Of The Chicago 7 (2020) – 6 Nominations

Another drama history takes center stage this year, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 has everyone buzzing. Taking place in 1968, this movie follows seven people on trial for their part in the uprising during the Democratic National Convention.

Directed by Aaron Sorkin, this movie scored six nominations: Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Original Song, Best Achievement in Film Editing, Best Actor (for Sacha Baron Cohen), and Best Picture.

3 Nomadland (2020) – 6 Nominations

Directed by Chloé Zhao, fans really can’t stop talking about Frances McDormand’s performance. After the Great Recession, a woman travels through the west of America, living in a van after losing everything.

With a nomination for McDormand, Nomadland also scored one for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, Best Achievement in Film Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Picture. This movie is definitely a front-runner for each of them, especially Best Director, with Zhao taking home the statute at other ceremonies.

2 Judas And The Black Messiah (2021) – 6 Nominations

The incredible Judas and the Black Messiah is a biography drama that follows the Black Panther Party, and the political and racial tensions that were rising at the time. With the FBI using an infiltrator to stop the party in its tracks, this timely, tragic, and powerful film is a must-watch.

Both LaKeith Stanfield and Daniel Kaluuya’s chilling performances got nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and it’s also up for Best Original Song, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Picture.

1 Mank (2020) – 10 Nominations

Some people expected this movie to be the front-runner of the year, while others remained on the fence. Nevertheless, David Fincher’s biography drama did justice to the classic Citizen Kane and had all film buffs in absolute awe.

With a whopping ten Oscar nominations, Mank is up for Best Actor (Gary Oldman), Best Supporting Actress (Amanda Seyfried), Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Director, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, Best Cinematography, and of course, Best Picture. Clearly, this movie needs a binge before the Oscars.
