Outlander is first and foremost a romance, no doubt about it. However, the series also explores relationships between friends and family members in equal depth.

Many of these friendships are some of the most compelling reasons to watch the show. Friendships like Claire and Murtagh, Jamie and Ian, and Fergus and Young Ian are deemed to be fan favorites as the viewers have seen their bonds go from strength-to-strength. This is mainly because a lot of them see each other as family. However, since the Fraser-MacKenzies are usually the ones that take center stage, there are often some other friendships on the show that overlooked.

10 Claire And Geillis In (Season 1 Only)

The friendship between Claire and Geillis is complicated to say the very least. Like Mrs. Fitz, Geillis treats Claire with kindness upon her arrival at Leoch, despite her outsider status and the suspicion that follows her.

Geillis senses something of a kindred spirit in Claire as they are both women of the future. She often takes Claire under her wing in season one, and even sacrifices herself and her unborn child in “The Devil’s Mark” to save Claire’s life at the height of their friendship. If the writers and Gabaldon had ended Geillis’ story here, fans would have remembered her as one of Claire’s greatest allies. But, as everyone knows, Geillis went on to become one of the worst villains in the entire show, destroying their friendship and making her utterly unredeemable.

9 Brianna And John

John is a good friend to Brianna, even if she doesn’t exactly return the favor all of the time. He comes to her aid while she waits for her parents to bring Roger home and acts as her betrothed in order to help her avoid a marriage to a man she doesn’t love.

He also agrees to escort her to Wilmington after Brianna tells him she wants to speak to Stephen Bonnet before he was executed. While Brianna and John did start off on unsettled ground after she tried to blackmail him, the two have gradually grown to respect and care about each other.

8 Claire And Mary

On the surface, many fans would say that the friendship between Claire and Mary is similar to that of a sisterly bond. After all, it is quite clear that Mary idolizes Claire and cares deeply about what she thinks. Unfortunately, this wasn’t always the case for Claire, who was seen to manipulate her several times to fulfill her own agendas (which was to ensure Frank was born).

While fans will agree that Claire did care for Mary as she did provide her with a lot of comfort and life advice, they do feel that the friendship had been tainted a little by Claire’s betrayal.

7 Claire And Mrs. Fitz

When Claire is brought to Castle Leoch, Mrs. Fitz is one of the few people to treat her with genuine kindness. She takes her in without too many questions and looks after her as she would anyone else.

Her kind heart offers Claire a bit of respite in the trying time that follows her first journey back in time through the stones. Sadly, fans see the last of Mrs. Fitz when Claire leaves Leoch, but this short-lived friendship was sweet while it lasted.

6 Claire And Joe

Outlander 10 Best Friendships Ranked

Claire and Joe have a lovely friendship that audiences don’t get to see enough of. However, from what the fans do see is that Joe was one of the best parts of Claire’s life without Jamie.

Initially, the show showed the two bond over the fact that they were outsiders in medical school, with Claire being ostracized for being the only female in the class, and Joe, the only Black student.

However, their friendship was seen to become even stronger once they graduated medical school, with Joe and Claire becoming each other’s confidants. In fact, they became so close that Claire even told Joe about Jamie, who she hardly ever spoke about once she returned to the 20th century. This was definitely one of the show’s most underrated friendships.

5 Claire And Louise

When Claire comes to Paris, she does manage to become quick friends with a young socialite named Louise. They spend a lot of time together as Louise shows Claire around France and introduces her to many social circles.

While most fans believed Louise could be a little shallow, they did appreciate how she comforted when Claire was grieving for Faith, offering her unconditional support since Jamie couldn’t be there. Claire had also helped Louise avoid a scandal after it was revealed she was pregnant with Bonnie Prince Charles’ baby. They may not be in touch anymore but these two women did help each other in their time of need.

4 Claire And Mother Hildegarde

While searching for a way to make herself useful in Paris, Claire is told about L’Hopital de Anges, a charity hospital run by the kind and commanding Mother Hildegarde, who Claire describes as a “force of nature.” Mother Hildegarde respects Claire for her medical talent and passion for helping others, and Claire returns that admiration.

Over time, this turns into a deep friendship, especially as Mother Hildegarde takes care of Claire in her darkest hour. As Claire was recuperating and grieving in hospital after finding out her daughter was stillborn, Mother Hildegarde was one of the few who tried to comfort her and tended to her fever as she fell ill.

Despite being against the law at the time, she also told Claire that she had baptized Faith so she could be buried in the church cemetery. Although Claire returned to Scotland not long after, she did show great appreciation to Mother Hildegarde trying to help her.

3 Claire And Monsieur Raymond

Outlander 10 Best Friendships Ranked

Typically, any friend who saves your life is a friend worth keeping. Claire saves Raymond’s life and he later returns the favor. When Claire comes to Paris, she finds a kindred spirit in Raymond, an eccentric man with a modern open-mindedness that makes Claire feel at ease. They bond over their knowledge of herbs and he helps her find work in the city.

When the King begins a witch hunt, Claire warns Raymond, whose practices are seen as a form of magic by some. He manages to hide but comes back when Claire is dying, using his healing abilities to save her life. She rescues him once again when she’s called in to bear witness to a trial for Raymond and the Comte St. Germain, and this is sadly the last the two ever see of each other.

2 Frank And Reverend Wakefield

While on their second honeymoon, Claire and Frank visit Frank’s close friend, Revered Wakefield. The two men share a passion for history, particularly that of the Scottish Highlands. When Claire goes missing, the Reverend does all he can to help Frank figure out what might have happened to her, as well as supporting him emotionally.

When Claire returns, the Reverend is there with the same support (even when Frank destroys his shed in a rage). It’s the Reverend’s words that inspire Frank to adopt Brianna as his own. The bond between them was seen to remain strong as it was also revealed in season 2 that Roger and the Reverend wrote to each other frequently before their deaths.

1 Rupert And Angus

Rupert and Angus are undoubtedly the two best friends on Outlander. The two revel in one another’s depravity, and take turns berating and encouraging each other. They are the true loves of one another’s life, in a way, with a brother-like bond that makes them two halves of a whole.

Though they are both side characters in the main story, their friendship is so strong that Angus’ death in season two makes for one of the saddest and most impactful of the whole series.
