Outlander 5 Reasons It Was Better Before The Time Jump (& 5 Reasons Its Better After)

Based on the time travel romance by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander covers as much of the material from the books as can be fit into each season. The first two seasons, like the first two novels, take place before the Battle of Culloden, an event that has tragic implications for the Fraser family.

From season three and on, the events of the show, like the corresponding books, take place after a 20-year time jump. The tone and feel of the show have slight differences from season to season, but the most marked contrast is in the “before” and “after” the significant time jump.

10 Before: Claire’s Predicament

Outlander 5 Reasons It Was Better Before The Time Jump (& 5 Reasons Its Better After)

Outlander begins with Claire traveling back in time through the stones at Craig na Dune. She has to piece together what’s happened to her, and how, all while being an Englishwoman among a bunch of Highlanders.

When her skills as a nurse make her valuable to the people at Castle Leoch, she’s held prisoner and left trying to figure out a way back to the stones, and to her own time. This dilemma is believable and compelling in the way that the initial setup of a story is, and cannot quite be replicated again to the same effect.

9 After: Jamie & Claire’s Reunion

After many years apart, Jamie and Claire’s reunion was very heartfelt and satisfying. The fact that their love endured throughout their time apart is proof that it was a permanent thing. With the Jacobite rising in the past, the two were finally free to be together without a foreseeable threat looming ahead.

Luckily, their passion hasn’t cooled at all with time and age, and their relationship is the most stable and solid that it’s ever been. A downside of the earlier seasons is knowing that the separation is imminent, but the later seasons are less stressful in that regard.

8 Before: Clan Mackenzie

When Claire first travels back in time, she’s taken in by Clan Mackenzie. The men treat her with distrust at first, even outright cruelty, but over time she earns their trust and begins to have an affection for them.

Angus, Murtagh, Rupert, and Willie, to name a few, all become beloved friends of Claire’s. Unfortunately, all but Murtagh died during the Battle of Culloden, if not before, and are not featured in the later seasons.

7 After: Marsali

The best thing to come out of Jamie and Claire’s time apart is Marsali. Despondent over the loss of his own child, Jamie grabs at the chance to be a father figure to Laoghaire’s children, Marsali and Joan. He loves the girls, but not Laoghaire, and quickly leaves their family behind to work as a printer in Edinburgh. When Claire comes back, his marriage to Laoghaire is annulled, but he still has to pay alimony to her and the girls.

He sends Young Ian to fetch gemstones that he can sell to pay the alimony, but Ian is captured and taken by pirates. Jamie, Claire, and Fergus set sail to get him back, and Fergus sneaks his new bride, Marsali, aboard. Her marriage to Fergus makes her a part of Jamie and Claire’s family, and her tendency to speak her mind makes her a highly endearing and entertaining character.

6 Before: Jamie & Claire Fall In Love

The chemistry between Jamie and Claire is evident from their first scene together. Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan make the development of the relationship between these two feel organic and enthralling. By the time they’re married about halfway through season one, the pairing seems totally right, despite it being arranged.

Jamie falls for Claire almost immediately, but it’s sweet to watch Claire’s feelings catch up to his. She’s initially focused on returning to her first husband, Frank, even after she and Jamie are wed. However, the way this relationship progresses makes her choice to remain with Jamie in the 18th century believable and right.

5 After: The Fraser Family

Jamie and Claire tragically lost their first child, Faith, who was stillborn in season two. They then spend more time apart and are unable to raise their second daughter, Brianna, together. After the time jump, it’s nice to see the Frasers finally have a large family.

Their nephew Ian, Jamie’s godfather Murtagh, Brianna, her husband Roger, their son Jemmy, and Fergus and Marsali and their children all end up living on Fraser’s Ridge. It’s very nice to see Jamie finally get to have a real family as he’d always wanted.

4 Before: Jack Randall

Obviously, Jack Randall is the absolute worst. However, the personal nature of the conflict between him and the Frasers, coupled with a great performance from Tobias Menzies, makes him the best villain the series has had so far.

His sadistic quest to break Jamie’s spirit and uncover Claire’s secret, and the volatile methods he uses make him a threat that is constantly looming over their heads. He’s a character that is genuinely frightening, and fills every scene he’s in with a sense of tension and dread. He’s certainly a character audiences love to hate.

3 After: Jamie’s Deal With Governor Tryon

Outlander 5 Reasons It Was Better Before The Time Jump (& 5 Reasons Its Better After)

When Jamie and Claire arrive in America, they’re offered a large tract of land from Governor Tryon in exchange for loyalty to the crown. Jamie takes this deal, but it comes with more strings than he imagined. He finds Murtagh in America, acting as the leader of the Regulators, a group that fights against unfair taxation. Jamie is tasked with finding Murtagh and bringing him to justice, so he tells him to hide.

They’re forced to fight against one another at the Battle of Alamance, where Jamie is made to wear a red coat. He’s then saved by Murtagh, who is shot and killed by a member of Jamie’s militia right after. All of this makes for a really interesting and highly persona conflict for Jamie, who wants to make a home for himself and Claire but struggles with siding with the men who slaughtered his people years ago.

2 Before: Less Wigs

Outlander 5 Reasons It Was Better Before The Time Jump (& 5 Reasons Its Better After)

In the first two seasons of the show, stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan sported their natural (albeit permed or dyed) hair. The later seasons, from season three onward, featured a 20-year time jump. In order to age Jamie and Claire sufficiently, they began sporting wigs. This is partly due to the damage the actor’s hair was facing from the constant perming and dyeing.

Additionally, Claire’s hair began to feature a few streaks of grey to show time passing, and Jamie’s hairstyles changed to reflect his age and station in life. The makeup and costume departments for the show always do a great job, but the latter-season hairstyles can’t top the beautiful curls from the early seasons.

1 After: More Locations

With the exception of a brief stint in France, Jamie and Claire spent most of their time in Scotland during the show’s earliest seasons. The later seasons gave them cause to do a bit more traveling, going from Edinburgh to Jamaica, to various locations in America.

The Frasers wash up on a beach in Georgia before making their way to North Carolina, where they settle. At the end of season four, they travel all the way to New York to find Roger and bring him back to Brianna. These locations make for beautiful visuals and fresh plot points.
