Outlander 5 Times Murtagh Broke Our Hearts (& 5 We Hated Him)

One of the most beloved characters in the hit STARZ romantic historical fantasy drama Outlander is Murtagh Fitzgibbons, the godfather to the swashbuckling Jamie Fraser and loyal to a fault.

Murtagh might have been grumpy by nature but he cared deeply for his loved ones and was a romantic at heart. His character may have bid a tragic farewell to the show in the latest season but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t remain a fan-favorite. However, although Jamie’s honorable godfather suffered a tremendous tragedy, there were a few times that the viewers couldn’t help but resent Murtagh for his troubling actions. Just look at these examples…

10 Hated: Egged Jamie On To Duel BJR

In season 2, Murtagh stayed by Jamie’s side as he made every effort to prevent the Jacobites from going to war. At this time he constantly egged Jamie on to take on the sadistic Black Jack Randall after the Captain had flogged and raped Jamie while at Wentworth Prison.

Since the audience was aware that Claire didn’t want the duel to happen as it would prevent Frank from being born, Murtagh’s thoughtless interference appeared annoying. It seemed even stranger that he was actively encouraging Jamie when he told Claire not to tell Jamie about Randall’s survival at all.

9 Brokenhearted: Revealed That He Loved Jamie’s Mom

Murtagh broke hearts for the first time in the series when he divulged to Claire that he had been in love with Jamie’s mother, Ellen, who had chosen another suitor, Brian, over him.

In season 1, Claire went searching for Jamie, Murtagh opened up to her about his history with Jamie’s mother and the reason behind his devotion to Jamie himself. He told her of the time he had killed a wild boar with a dagger to impress young Ellen and then gifted the elephant tusks as bracelets to her when she got married. The fans’ hearts wept for Murtagh as the loyal, but grumpy elderly man revealed a softer, profound side to him.

8 Hated: Argued With Claire

Before Murtagh opened his heart to Claire in season 1 while looking for Jamie, he wasn’t a very lovely person to be around.

Claire kept nagging him that their tactics to lure Jamie weren’t working, so perhaps it wasn’t totally surprising that Murtagh would react after a point of time. He was at this time still just a shabby, grumpy fellow whose backstory and deep loyalty to Jamie was yet to be revealed. So although his interactions with Claire weren’t necessarily hateful, they didn’t endear him to fans either, until of course, he gradually grew on the audience.

7 Brokenhearted: Asked Jocasta To Wait For Him

Murtagh hadn’t stopped Jocasta from agreeing to marry Duncan Innes, even though he and Jocasta were in love with each other.

Yet, at the very last moment, on the night before her wedding, Murtagh changed his mind and asked Jocasta to wait for him. It was, of course, too late by then and Jocasta couldn’t possibly have stopped the wedding by then. For a brief time, it had been really heartwarming to see Murtagh in a relationship. It was just heartwrenching that he couldn’t get his happy ending either.

6 Hated: ….After Letting Her Go

Yet, although he did come to her at the last minute, Murtagh didn’t exactly stop Jocasta from going ahead with her wedding to Innes when she first told him.

The writers gave the narrative a beautiful twist when they showed Murtagh getting romantically involved with Ellen’s older sister, and Jamie’s aunt. But unfortunately, although they would have made a lovely couple, Murtagh asked Jocasta to get married as his own future was uncertain, causing fans to hate him for being so indecisive.

5 Brokenhearted: Jamie Releasing Murtagh From His Oath

In season 5, Murtagh got involved with a band of Regulators who were protesting Governor Tryon’s tax laws. And as luck would have it, Jamie was tasked to get together a group of men and hunt him down and even fight in the Battle of Alamance.

At this time, Jamie requested Murtagh to hide and keep himself as far away from the Governor’s men as possible. Years ago, Murtagh had vowed to Jamie’s mother after he was born that he would stay Jamie’s loyal lieutenant always. Jamie releasing Murtagh from his oath so that the latter could stay safe was a deeply moving moment indeed.

4 Hated: Took Advantage Of Young Ian

In season 4, Murtagh made a wonderful comeback, to the pleasant surprise of the fans. He was now working as a blacksmith in the town where Jamie and Young Ian had come looking for tenants for their land in Frasers’ Ridge.

But a decent fellow though he was, he seemed willing to take advantage of innocent customers who trusted him and could be easily manipulated. He almost took Young Ian for a ride when he first met him without knowing his true identity, charging him several times more than what the minor repair he had done was really worth. It’s impossible to completely hate Murtagh Fitzgibbons but this one time, fans came pretty close.

3 Brokenhearted: “Dinna Be Afraid…”

In season 5, episode 7, Murtagh left his fans weeping and brokenhearted when he got shot during the Battle of Alamance and died peacefully in Jamie’s arms.

His death was anticipated but still ended up being a tear-jerker as Jamie desperately tried to save his godfather, telling him that he hadn’t released Murtagh from his oath to protect him after all, so he had no right to leave his side. As Murtagh died, he told his godson, “Dinna be afraid, a bhalaich. It doesn’t hurt a bit to die.” A tragic but honorable end to a good, fearless man.

2 Hated: Made Pig-Headed Choices

Outlander 5 Times Murtagh Broke Our Hearts (& 5 We Hated Him)

The latest season has had several harrowing moments for all the characters as the series got more and more intense. Murtagh Fitzgibbons made some decisions this season that although nobly meant, ultimately cost him his life.

Murtagh became the leader of the Regulators and took up arms against the British Government, refusing to listen to reason even to save his life. He also repeatedly put the lives of Fergus, Marsali, and their son, as well as Jamie’s family at risk when he kept popping up to see or stay with them. A few pig-headed choices less and things could have turned out differently for the fan-favorite.

1 Brokenhearted: Appeared In Claire’s Fantasy

The final time that Murtagh Fitzgibbons broke hearts was when he appeared in Claire’s illusion in the season 5 finale as part of her family, alive and happy.

As Claire lay captive during one of the most horrifying experiences she had ever been subjected to in her life, her mind sought refuge in a fragmented fantasy with her favorite people – all of whom he considered family. One of them was Murtagh who appeared to be looking dapper in a coat and seemed very much in love with Jocasta by his side. The thought of what could have been but was never meant to be for Murtagh was very much dead by then anyway, was heartrending indeed.
