Outlander Friendships That Should Have Happened (But Didnt)

While Outlander may be best known for its romance between Jamie and Claire Fraser, there are a variety of other kinds of relationships that are explored. The show also delves into family dynamics, of both the found family and biological nature. Friendships can also take center stage.

Some existing standouts are Claire and Murtagh, Rupert and Angus, and Roger and Ian, to name a few. There have been some potentially missed opportunities when it comes to friendships on the show, however, either due to characters never interacting or the simple lack of time to explore and develop other relationships.

10 Claire And Geillis

Outlander Friendships That Should Have Happened (But Didnt)

The friendship between Claire and Geillis is perhaps one of Outlander’s biggest missed opportunities. Their relationship had a promising beginning in season one, as Claire found another outsider in Geillis. They were both treated with suspicion and distrust from the villagers and shared extensive knowledge of herbs and potions. Unbeknownst to Claire, Geillis was a fellow time traveler and was in a way the only person who could truly understand what Claire had been through (until Brianna and Roger travel back in season four).

Their friendship never went too deep, as Claire never fully trusted Geillis and they were separated after the witch trial. But when these women came into contact with one another again in season three, Geillis was unrecognizable. Her true colors were shown, as the viewers discovered she was a serial killer, slave owner, and rapist. If Gabaldon had gone in a different direction to the one she had planned, Claire and Geillis could have been good friends.

9 Claire And Ian

Outlander Friendships That Should Have Happened (But Didnt)

Claire and Ian have shared some nice moments together, but their relationship hasn’t developed much on-screen. He gives her advice after she marries into the Fraser family as the two share a love for the bull-headed Jamie and Jenny.

They’re part of one another’s family, and there’s a lot of potential for a friendship. Ian has also shown much sympathy for Claire, persuading Jenny to go easy on her and Jamie more than once. Fans would love it if they got to share more time in the future.

8 Claire And Mrs. Fitz

Outlander Friendships That Should Have Happened (But Didnt)

Aside from Jamie, Mrs. Fitz is one of the first and only people to treat Claire with kindness upon her arrival at Castle Leoch. She respects Claire’s knowledge of healing and takes care of her as she would anyone else. The two share a few sweet moments in season one, but their relationship doesn’t develop much.

Although, perhaps where things currently stand in the story, they may not get along as well (because of Laoghaire, ye ken?). Mrs. Fitz is a kind and relatively tolerant woman though, so perhaps there’s a chance they would still be friendly.

7 Murtagh And Marsali

Outlander Friendships That Should Have Happened (But Didnt)

Murtagh and Marsali would have had a nice dynamic, but they didn’t get to share much screen time. One of the only times they interact is when Murtagh hides out with her and Fergus. She asks him to recruit Fergus to the Regulators so that he will feel useful.

Murtagh honors her request, but they don’t have a whole lot of interaction beyond that, though they are technically part of the same family, as Marsali’s father-in-law is Murtagh’s godson. Murtagh and Marsali are both fiercely protective of the people that they love, and they could have bonded over this strength, acting as their family’s protectors.

6 Murtagh And Ian

Outlander Friendships That Should Have Happened (But Didnt)

Young Ian is another character fans would have liked to have seen share more screen time with Murtagh. Young Ian is always looking for role models, and Murtagh was likely someone he looked up to (despite the fact that Murtagh cheated him out of a bunch of money the first time they met).

They both value their family, take pride in keeping their word and protecting those they love. They’re two of the most loyal people on the show, so it’s a shame the viewers didn’t get to see their relationship develop a bit more.

5 Brianna And Fergus

Outlander Friendships That Should Have Happened (But Didnt)

Brianna and Fergus are technically siblings, though you wouldn’t know it from their few interactions on the show. Before Brianna was born, Jamie and Claire took Fergus in and gave him a home. Even after Claire returns to the future, Jamie continues to look after Fergus.

Of course, Brianna was raised knowing nothing about Jamie or Fergus, but even once she’s gone to the 18th century to warn her parents of the danger that might befall them, there’s no talk of her relationship with her adopted brother.

It might have been nice to see these two find they had more family in each other since they both grew up without many relatives. It also could have been interesting for Brianna to talk to someone who actually knew what Jamie and Claire were like as parents together.

4 Roger And Fergus

Outlander Friendships That Should Have Happened (But Didnt)

Fergus is a character that seems to get along with most and puts people at ease. Roger doesn’t exactly fit in right away in the 18th century, not having any useful skills at his disposal to help himself or others. Fergus struggles with this sort of thing as well, though he’s more capable in many ways than Roger.

Fergus’s missing hand leads others to underestimate his abilities, even though his bravery and loyalty rival that of any other man on Fraser’s Ridge. Fergus would have been an excellent friend for Roger to have as he settled into his new life in the past. He also might have helped bridge the gap between Roger and his rather hostile father-in-law, Jamie.

3 Roger And Frank

Outlander Friendships That Should Have Happened (But Didnt)

Roger and Frank have a lot in common, outside of being two of the most important men in Brianna’s life. They’re both men of academia and both historians at that. When Roger and Brianna get married, Jamie is the only surviving father Brianna has.

Roger and Jamie don’t get along, mainly due to their first meeting, their different religious beliefs, and their different outlooks on life. Though Roger and Jamie couldn’t have less in common, it’s likely that Frank would have taken a greater liking to Brianna’s Oxford man.

2 Ian And Lizzie

Outlander Friendships That Should Have Happened (But Didnt)

Ian is such a sweetheart, he could easily make friends with just about anyone. And Lizzie seems like she might need a friend. She accompanied Brianna to America as her servant and still acts as such even though Brianna never really asked her to.

Outside of her relationship with Brianna and her loyalty to everyone on Fraser’s Ridge, Lizzie doesn’t appear to have many friends. She seemed to have something of a crush on Ian when they first met, but nothing ever came of it as he was more interested in Brianna.

During his time with the Mohawk, Ian seems to have had a wife and child, but for some reason, it didn’t work out (it’s been implied that his child died and that he can no longer be with his wife). Things don’t necessarily need to become romantic between him and Lizzie, but it seems like they each could use a friend in season six.

1 Jenny And Jocasta

Jenny and Jocasta might find a good match in each other, both being stubborn people who are strong in their convictions and unafraid to tell people what they think. Jocasta has a bit more tact than Jenny, but she would probably be amused by her niece’s fiery spirit. Jenny would admire that Jocasta does things her own way and is rather straightforward. These two aunties would also bond over tormenting Claire.
