Outlander The 10 Most Hated Storylines

Outlander has no doubt been one of the most talked-about romantic dramas of TV history. People loved the delicious, sometimes teasing romance between Claire and Jamie, the story of the love lost between her and Frank, the interesting chatter inside the Castle Leoch, and most of all, Claire’s thrilling adventures.

The series has spanned five seasons so far, the last of which is still airing, which means there have been dozens of memorable storylines throughout the saga. And although fans loved most of the storylines, there were a few they openly ranted about. Today, we are going to share with you ten such storylines that were hated the most by fans.

10 Roger’s Arc

Roger has some really misogynistic conservative views about sex and marriage. Long before his wedding with Brianna, he had lashed out at Brianna for wanting to sleep with him before marriage.

When he found out about the assault, he almost left her. He also freaked out on the news of her pregnancy. Not only this, but he also took him a while to admit Jeremiah was his own son.

9 The Dungeons Assault

In the finale episode of the first season, Jack Randall gets to hurl his obscene inhumane fetishes on Jamie. He plays a caring nurse also to get Jamie back to his senses so he can break him all over again. He had tried to break his self-respect one too many times before but had failed each and every time.

He flogged him, tried to kill him, and even set him up on the charges of another man’s murder, but could not break his body, mind or soul. The next time he tried mixing humiliation, pleasure, and pain with torture. The whole episode was extremely disturbing, and honestly, fans could have done without it.

8 Angus’s Runtime

Angus was a great comic relief in this otherwise heavy drama and romance series, and yet, his character was killed a little too soon. This character is probably one of the very few, for whom the storyline was significantly modified.

Although time and again, he came up as a supportive friend, loyal follower, and quite an interesting character, his character couldn’t be explored deeper. He died after the Battle of Prestonpans.

7 Brianna’s Assault

The book and the show, both have been famous for rather graphic scenes of this sort. Be it the dungeons episode, or Brianna’s incident, both instances had audiences shocked and numb for weeks.

The circumstances in which Brianna’s sexual assault happened resonates with the world of not only the 18th century but current times too. Some fans believe the showrunners should have kept the camera on Bree to maximize the effect of the incidence, but regardless, the scene was incredibly disturbing.

6 Black Jack And Mary’s Wedding

Mary truly loved Alexander Randall, the brother of Jack Randall. She was pregnant with Alex’s child, and both were hoping to get married. The hope crumbled away pretty soon when Alexander was diagnosed with a rare fatal disease.

To ensure her and their child’s honor, safety, and social status, Alex gets her to agree to marry his brother. It was extremely tragic to see the naïve and pretty Mary pronouncing wedding vows with Black Jack.

5 Jamie’s Reaction

In the books, when Jamie found out about Brianna, he got very emotional, and a whole chapter is dedicated to the beautiful tender moment when the estranged father and daughter meet for the first time!

In the show though, Jamie largely remained unresponsive, and the reaction only (if it did) showed up in a fleeting glance. The book worms, and fans had been expecting at least half of an episode exploring these moments and portraying them on screen, but, when the same didn’t happen, they were disappointed.\

4 Jamie’s Wedding With Laoghaire

Jamie knew that Laoghaire was the one responsible for Claire’s witch trial, which was only officially intended for Geils. Laoghaire transpired the conspiracy, by sending a note to Claire under Geils’ name, to meet the latter at her house.

The former did so and got caught by the local policemen. Despite knowing all this, and that Laoghaire was essentially a spiteful stubborn woman, he married her after the Battle of Culloden in the absence of Claire. It seems a bit awkward, but he did so to support Laoghaire after her widowhood.

3 Murtagh’s Regulator & Jocasta Angle

Outlander The 10 Most Hated Storylines

When Jamie, Claire, and Murtagh leave Scotland, Murtagh repeats his promise to his Godson Jamie, that he will always be there for him, and that he will do his bidding whenever he requires his service.

As destiny had it, with time, they have to part ways, and Murtagh, instead of finding Jamie, becomes the leader of a regulator army. This risky life becomes an obstacle in his love story with Jocasta, who really liked him. She wanted a stable life, and hence, they had to break up.

2 Claire Traveling Back To Future Leaving Jamie Behind

Outlander The 10 Most Hated Storylines

Fans have experienced a pretty hard time wrapping their head around the first few moments of the second season. The books have the same story arc too, but her traveling back to Frank is described later in them.

In the show, the season cold opens with a disheveled, anxious Claire ending up back in her own time even before the Battle of Culloden actually started. Just because Jamie asked her to return to the future due to the uncertainties of war, she actually did so. Many fans felt this was not like Claire.

1 Brianna And Roger

Surprisingly, the most hated storyline throughout all the seasons, has more often than not, been the storyline of the ringlet goddess Bree and her beau Roger. The reason has not entirely to do with the actual storyline (except a chunk of it), but their screentime.

Their love story and dynamics snatched almost half of the space that the passionate and tender love story of Claire and Jamie used to hold in the initial seasons.
