Paper Mario The Origami King How To Restore Shriveled And Faded Items

In the 2D, paper-cutout world of Paper Mario: The Origami King, items can get shriveled or faded with time, rendering them useless. Just like in real life, paper in the game won’t stay pristine forever. Unlike real life, however, there is a way for players to refresh these shriveled and faded paper items and restore them to their previous vitality.

Many of these shriveled and faded items will come from Whispering Woods at the start of the game. On their own, they look like typical inventory items and don’t provide much of a hint about how to render them usable again. One of the items is required to advance the story, forcing players to figure out the mechanic to get unstuck. Here’s how to restore shriveled and faded items in Paper Mario: The Origami King.

Find Shriveled Items in Paper Mario: The Origami King

In Whispering Woods at the start of the game, Mario will come upon some trees with vines hanging. Like the vines that opened the memory mini-game by the ground spikes, Mario can pull these vines to release items.

He will likely receive a Shriveled Mushroom, Shriveled Fire Flower, and, most importantly, Shriveled Seed. This seed is required to continue the game, so players will need to be sure to find and hold onto it.

To get to the Shriveled Seed, players will want to navigate to the trees with the hanging vines and pull the vine on the back right tree three times, until a log falls out. Mario can then use the log to climb up the plateaus to the left and find a vine attached to a large gold ball.

The vine is a red herring and will break when pulled, but hitting the tree with a hammer will open a magic circle, indicating the use of the 1000-Fold Arms. This will allow Mario to open the gold ball and take the seed.

Later in the game, Mario will find other shriveled and faded items, and even a few shriveled and faded characters. Once these characters get restored, they may join Mario on his quest or in battle.

Restore Shriveled Items in Paper Mario: The Origami King

Somewhat counter-intuitively, the key to restoring shriveled and faded items is water. However, not just any water will do. Mario needs to find the Secret Spring some of the trees whisper about at the start of the game.

Once Mario finds the Shriveled Seed, he will need to continue down the path beyond the Forest Maze and Ol’ Grandsappy. He will come to a fork in the road and can take either path to reach a cutscene. Following the scene, taking the rightmost path will lead to the Secret Spring.

Mario can toss in the Shriveled Soul Seed to restore it, along with any other shriveled and faded items or characters he has encountered. Later in the game, he can return to the Secret Spring in Whispering Woods to restore other shriveled or faded items he finds.
