Parks & Rec Why Ron Works For The Government (Despite Hating It)

Parks & Recreation had a bunch of colorful characters, each with their own ideas about life and politics, and one of the most peculiar ones was Ron Swanson, who never hid his hate for the government, yet he worked for it for years – here’s why. Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur, Parks & Recreation debuted on NBC in 2009, and even though it had a rough start, it lived on for six more seasons, officially coming to an end in 2015.

Parks & Recreation followed the daily lives of Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) and her friends and coworkers from the Parks Department in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. Leslie was an eternal optimist and working for the government was her passion – the complete opposite to her boss and friend (or “work-place proximity associate”) Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman). Known for his deadpan and stereotypical masculine personality, Ron was a libertarian and hated the government, and was never shy when it came to sharing his views. And yet, he worked for the government for a long, long time, which has confused fans for years.

Ron’s efforts constantly went towards making the Parks Department as ineffective as possible by hiring lazy and poorly skilled people and more, as he believed in as small a government as possible (he even shared his views with a young girl who needed to make an essay about the government, and her mother wasn’t pleased with what Ron taught her). With that in mind, it’s actually easy to see why he worked for the government for so long: to mess with it from the inside, and show the citizens of Pawnee how ineffective the government really is. Of course, hating the government yet working for it was also great in terms of comedy, so looking at it from the writers’ perspective, it’s understandable why Ron worked for the government for so long.

Still, this has made way for various fan theories that have tried to give a different explanation to Ron’s motivations. The most popular one suggests Ron’s reason for working for the government, and specifically the Parks Department, is because his legendary treasure is buried in one of Pawnee’s parks. Although Ron valued privacy over most things and hardly ever gave any personal information away, it’s well known that he had enough wealth to live comfortably whenever he chose to retire and even hid some gold. Ron then took a job at the Parks Department to make sure no one dug up his treasure, and if someone wanted to dig or plant a tree, they would have had to ask for his permission as he was the director of the department.

The reasons behind Ron Swanson working for the government could be a combination of everything: to destroy it from the inside, to keep his wealth hidden and safe for as long as he could, and to keep the comedy of the series flowing. In the end, Ron was given the perfect job as Superintendent of National Park in Pawnee, where he had to spend hours and hours in the woods and didn’t have to socialize at all.
