Pop culture reporter Kyle Buchanan took to Twitter today to give director Paul Thomas Anderson fans yet another reason to admire the beloved director: he’s as supportive as he is talented.
Paul Thomas Anderson is known as a writer and director of compelling and visually stunning – if often offbeat – films. Though he’s not as prolific as other beloved directors – his career spans over two decades, yet boasts only eight features films – what Anderson lacks in quantity he more than makes up for in quality. His films have been nominated for 11 Academy Awards, though he’s never won one, and he remains a favorite of critics and cinephiles alike. Now, his passion for film proves why he’s such a vital component in Hollywood.

In a secondhand story via Twitter, Buchanan shared an anecdote from John Krasinski regarding Anderson. When Krasinski claimed that an unnamed “artsy” movie was “bad,” Anderson told him, “Don’t say that. Don’t say that it’s not a good movie. If it wasn’t for you, that’s fine, but in our business, we’ve all got to support each other.” Anderson further stipulated why support was so important for more avant-garde films, explaining, “You’ve got to support the big swing. If you put it out there that the movie’s not good, they won’t let us make more movies like that.” For his part, Anderson has staked his entire career on movies that, by most standards, wouldn’t get the green light and his efforts almost always pay off – at least in terms of critical success. However, true to his own advice, Anderson’s support for his fellow filmmaker extends beyond his own genres as well.
Not that any one genre can really apply to Anderson’s work – from tales of the porn industry in Boogie Nights (featuring the late, great Burt Reynolds in an iconic role) to a thinly veiled Scientology allegory in The Master to the trials and tribulations of an oil baron in There Will Be Blood – Anderson never tells the same story twice. Though, like all auteurs, he has a few signatures, such as complex, male protagonists who feel a sense of being left behind; not to mention a penchant for period pieces.
In advising others to be more supportive of all types of film, Anderson is likely echoing the support he’s enjoyed throughout his career. Though his films might be considered awards bait, they are rarely box office smashes. His highest-grossing film, There Will Be Blood, grossed only $40 million and most of his other films come in around – or well below – the $25 million mark. His latest film, 2017’s Phantom Thread, grossed only $21 million, despite featuring the (possible) final performance of one of this generation’s greatest actors. Paul Thomas Anderson always swings big, and even if it’s not always a home run, he gets to keep making them and we get to keep reaping those rewards.
