PAX Online Puts Dozens Of Free Demos On Steam Through This Weekend

As part of the PAX Online expo, dozens of game demos are now available to try for free via Steam. The move comes as PAX hosts a digital event to replace PAX West this year, with the game demos offering a replacement to the standard booths that are set up at conferences to allow attendees to try out early builds. The event started on September 12th and is set to run until September 20th.

PAX West 2020 has shifted to an online-only event this year, following the restrictions in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The organizers revealed earlier this year that PAX Online would be free to watch for anyone who wants to tune in. There are several days of planned panels, showcases, and presentations from individuals and developers within the gaming industry. All of the content will be streamed online through multiple platforms, and will include tournaments and other events that are usually found at PAX West in physical form.

Dozens of indie game demos are available to download through Steam as part of the PAX Online conference. The organizers of the digital event have collaborated with Valve to release the free demos to as wide an audience as possible over the next week or so. All players have to do to try out the different titles is to head over to Steam and download the demos. They will then be available throughout the duration of PAX Online. Some of the most promising-looking games include Swapette Showdown, IONIA, Mutropolis, Haiki, and DwarfHeim.

Steam has been in a battle with the Epic Games Store for the last few years, with the Fortnite publisher attempting to muscle in on what has traditionally been a Valve-dominated market. But there’s also been lots of good news for Steam in recent months. One prime example of that is the fact that EA now offers its game subscription service, EA Play, through Steam as well as its own desktop app.

Although they are not something that the vast majority of gamers get to experience, conferences play a vital role in marketing titles and getting important feedback directly from players. Missing out on this type of opportunity would have been a big blow to developers, especially smaller independent studios that don’t have the funds for large-scale testing. So it makes lots of sense for PAX Online to come up with another solution to keeps fans and developers happy. Offering these demos for free through Steam will ensure that lots of people try them out and may even lead to better games, and better sales when the titles eventually launch.
