Peacemaker vs Swamp Thing Reveals the Wannabe Heros Greatest Flaw

Warning: contains a preview for The Swamp Thing #8!

The Peacemaker, the breakout star of this year’s The Suicide Squad film, is heading for a showdown with the new Swamp Thing, exposing the would-be hero’s fatal flaw. The Suicide Squad, including Peacemaker and Amanda Waller, are pursuing Swamp Thing for their own dark ends. And while the Peacemaker has defeated a number of tough opponents in his day, he never has encountered one quite like Swamp Thing. The Swamp Thing #8 is on sale October 5 in print and digital.

Alec Holland, DC’s classic Swamp Thing, has relinquished the role and returned to the Green. Levi Kamei has taken his place, slowly coming to terms with what he has become. Kamei has already attracted the attention of some of the DC Universe’s most powerful players, including Amanda Waller. Seeing the potential to create a surveillance network unlike any other using Swamp Thing, Waller is sending the Suicide Squad to capture him, and Peacemaker is in command of this particularly dangerous unit. In a preview for the upcoming The Swamp Thing #8, the unstable Peacemaker sets out to bring Swamp Thing in, and it may be the biggest mistake he will ever make. The issue is written by Ram V, with art by Mike Perkins, colors by Mike Spicer and letters by Aditya Bidikar.

Last issue, Asa, another Suicide Squad operative, had Swamp Thing at a disadvantage but let him go, now telling an incredulous Peacemaker that the creature was not hers to keep. Asa advises the Peacemaker not to pursue the creature, saying it is folly for him and Waller to think they can capture, let alone control, a being who has always been depicted as close to godhood in DC lore. But Peacemaker is obsessed with his mission over all else, revealing two bio-tech treated rods and stating, “There is peace yet to be made here, and I will make it… one way or another.” He then heads out in search of Swamp Thing, and what is likely to be the beating of his life, as Asa points out that his hubris is his great flaw – one which in this case may finally get him killed.

Asa is absolutely correct: neither Peacemaker nor Amanda Waller can truly control Swamp Thing. The Swamp Thing is an elemental, an embodiment of the Green, representing all plant life on Earth. The chemical rods Peacemaker is putting his faith in may make a dent in Swamp Thing, but it is unlikely they can truly hurt a being who can morph and even fully regrow his body. In the same preview, readers see Swamp Thing easily take down the ultra-toxic Chemo, a much more powerful character than Peacemaker – what chance does he truly stand against the Earth elemental? As Asa observes, Peacemaker’s great flaw is that his zeal for his mission drives him to take on impossible odds even when a strategic retreat is the better option.

Unlike a hero like Captain America, Peacemaker is not just principled and driven, but obsessed with his mission and convinced he’s the only one who can accomplish it. This is part of the reason he’s so willing to do terrible things in the name of peace. Believing he’s the only person who can bring the world peace means Peacemaker has to accept that no target is too big, and no tactic is off the table. The Suicide Squad’s Peacemaker may feel there is peace to be made in the swamp, but in reality he is on a collision course with the new Swamp Thing, and his particular brand of violence is likely to see him pay a high price for his staggering hubris.
