Perseverance Finds Tons Of Mars Rocks Hiding In The Sandy Surface

It’s well-known that Mars has a bunch of rocks all over its surface, and NASA’s Perseverance rover just found a heap of them while exploring the planet. For all the talk there is of humans visiting and living on Mars, it’s important to remember how much different it really is from Earth. Earth has plentiful oxygen, flowing water, relatively comfortable temperatures, and beautiful greenery. Mars, by comparison, has none of this. It’s a dry, rocky, and dusty planet that’s not welcome to human life in the slightest.

While these dangerous conditions have prevented humans from walking on the Red Planet yet, advanced robots have provided incredible views of it over the years. Today, one of the most active robots is Perseverance. Perseverance landed on Mars this past February alongside Ingenuity (the first helicopter to land and fly on Mars). The past few months have seen Perseverance explore various parts of Mars, collect important rock samples, and capture thousands of detailed images of these journies. From gorgeous Martian sunrises to imposing mountains, Perseverance has seen a lot in just a few short months.

Perseverance uploaded a new batch of photos on December 6 — one of which is seen above. Captured with Perseverance’s Left Navigation Camera, this picture highlights the stark difference of the Martian surface compared to Earth. In front of Perseverance is a sandy surface, seemingly endless rocks hiding underneath it, and an eerie gray sky in the background. Similar to other photos, Mars continues to impress with the variety of rocks it has. The ones in this picture all vary ever so slightly from one another. Some appear quite large, others are barely visible from the sand, and they all have different shapes.

Perseverance Gets A Closer Look At Its Rocky Friends

The second photo offers a different view of this same area. This one was taken with Perseverance’s Right Navigation Camera and provides a much closer look at the rocks in the first picture. This makes their finer details clearly present. All of the rocks appear to have a rough surface and uneven edges — likely the result of billions of years of wind and sandstorms. The picture also reveals fine swirls in the sand around the rocks, also likely caused by Mars’ regular wind.

Just like all of Perseverance’s other Mars photos, these ones are further proof of how harshly beautiful the planet can be. Does it lack oxygen and have freezing temperatures that could quickly kill someone? Absolutely. Is it a desolate planet filled with rocks, sand, and dirt? Of course. But that doesn’t mean it can’t still look stunning. Mars always finds its own unique ways of catching the eye, and these two images do exactly that.
