Peter Weber (Also) Reached Out to Hannah Brown After Proposing to Hannah Ann

Among the many bombs Hannah Ann Sluss dropped as she destroyed Peter Weber on live television was this: he reached out to Hannah Brown after the filming of The Bachelor. This isn’t a huge surprise, considering how strong their connection was and the fact that there were some unresolved feelings there. It was, however, not respectful of Hannah Ann, his fiancée at the time.

Hannah was on this season of The Bachelor, albeit briefly. She walked out of the limo in the premiere to hand Peter back his wings, a memento he had given Hannah on her season. Then she returned for a group date that went awry, with Hannah telling Peter she might have made a mistake letting him go. Meanwhile, Peter spent a considerable amount of time talking with Hannah during that ill-fated group date and ignoring the other women. It was a move that set him off on the wrong foot from the get go; it all spiraled from there. The way Peter looked at Hannah in that scene, the one where he clearly wanted to kiss her but thought better of it, was probably the strongest connection he had with anyone on the season. His final two consisted of a woman he wasn’t ever fully in love with and another who lives her life considerably differently than Peter.

During Chris Harrison’s sit-down with Peter and Hannah Ann on night two of a finale that went completely off the rails (see: Barb), Hannah Ann told Peter that there were three women involved in their relationship once they got home from Australia. One was Madison. Peter was apparently transparent with Hannah Ann that he hadn’t gotten over her yet. And the other was Hannah Brown, whom Peter had contacted upon returning stateside. The extent of that conversation is unknown. Was Peter asking for another chance? Was he just checking in? Was he going to tell her the good news that he found another woman with the same name?

Regardless of motive, Peter’s decision to call Hannah is yet another sign he wasn’t prepared to get engaged to Hannah Ann. Heck, he wasn’t prepared to get engaged at all. While Hannah Ann saying that Peter needs to learn how to be a real man was a bit harsh, she’s not far off base.

But here’s what we need to realize: Peter is not this terrible person. He is a representation of how many men would react in this situation, eager to reap all the rewards of being The Bachelor – including the engagement at the end. He is also a symptom of the societal glorification of marriage, something The Bachelor and other shows of its ilk exacerbate by treating televised proposals and weddings as these extraordinary culminations of the stories they tell. In reality, the proposal is just a moment, not some magic spell that wards off the forces of tumult.

Peter wasn’t the worst Bachelor because he was ill-intentioned; he was the worst Bachelor because someone like him was bound to come along eventually, someone who wants all the trappings of a traditional heterosexual relationship without placing much thought into the actual relationship itself. The engagement should only be the best day of a couple’s life until the day after that. And the day after that, and so on. Hannah Ann deserves someone who knows and expects that to be true.
