Phase 4s Young Avengers Leader Needs To Honor Endgames Ronin Arc

Kate Bishop’s arc in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe should honor Clint Barton’s brief run as Ronin in Avengers: Endgame, but not in the way that is immediately obvious. Clint will be training Kate as his protégé in the Disney+ series Hawkeye. As she’s potentially primed to become the leader of the Young Avengers later on in Phase 4 like she is in Marvel Comics, her arc should be about using her skills for more than retribution.

Hawkeye’s storyline as Ronin in Endgame was all about revenge following the death of his family at Thanos’ hand in Avengers: Infinity War. In the five years after the Mad Titan’s decimation, Clint changed his costume and his mission, killing criminals from all over the world out of anger that they survived and his family didn’t. It was a dark turn for a character whose previous actions had been considered good and heroic. While Clint has his family back now after Endgame, his brutal acts during the film could be used as a teachable moment for Kate, whose superhero origin story is traumatic and could lead her down a similar and vengeful road.

First introduced in 2005’s Young Avengers #1, Kate Bishop actually crossed paths with the Avengers before she joined their superhero ranks. As a child, she was kidnapped by El Matador, a villain with shady business connections to Kate’s father. However, the Avengers arrive on the scene to help. Later on in her life, Kate was mercilessly attacked during a walk in the park. While the details of the incident have never been divulged, Kate is mentally scarred after the encounter. The attack fuels her to learn archery, different forms of martial arts, and sword fighting. Although she never tells anyone about the attack besides Jessica Jones and her therapist, Kate eventually puts her skills to good use when she aids the Young Avengers in stopping a robbery and joins the team shortly afterward.

Considering the reason behind why she decided to train herself in the first place, Kate may want to exact her revenge on her attackers and anyone else who lurks in the dark to prey on women. There’s also the fact Kate becomes disillusioned with her father Derek, a criminal who wants his daughter killed. That would make for a great revenge plot. To be fair, Kate isn’t as vengeful in the comics as Clint was in Avengers: Endgame, nor do her actions ever go so far or get as dark and deadly.

All that said, Kate’s arc in Hawkeye could hinge on her need for vengeance. The only way to properly address Clint’s Avengers: Endgame arc is for him to teach Kate how to channel her anger into something useful and good. Kate is still young and has a lot to learn. Clint could be a great guide if he himself understands what he did after he lost his family was wrong. Offering Kate advice and showing her how to fuel any vengeful energy she might have into something productive is the only way to go. It would be a fantastic lesson for Kate on the destruction revenge can cause, while also acknowledging Clint’s actions in Endgame. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.
