Pirates of the Caribbean: 10 Worst Things Elizabeth Swann Did, Ranked
Elizabeth Swann may be the heroine of Pirates of the Caribbean, but she is as morally grey as the rest of the scoundrels in this series.

Elizabeth Swann is one of the main trio in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. She is played with wit and energy by Keira Knightley. Elizabeth is a well-loved heroine who fans get to watch grow from a damsel in distress to a badass pirate captain of her own.
But, Elizabeth, like every character in the Pirates franchise, is far from perfect. Many of her choices over four films are questionable. You have to be a little bit evil to be a pirate, and Elizabeth certainly fits the bill. Here are the ten worst things Elizabeth Swann ever did in Pirates of the Caribbean.
10 Leaving Her Father
Despite the trouble Lord Cutler Beckett appears to be causing in Port Royal, Elizabeth goes off on another dangerous adventure after her fiance Will, leaving her aged father alone to deal with Cutler Beckett and the issues he is causing with the East India Trading Company.
In her absence (despite Elizabeth having understood the danger the company posed to her person and those she loved) her father is killed. Governor Swann never quite understood his daughter and was always mean to Will, but Elizabeth knew better than to leave him behind.
9 Leaving Jack Behind
In Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, both Will and Jack show up to save Elizabeth. Will, not trusting Jack, knocks him out before fleeing with Elizabeth. Both Elizabeth and Will leave Jack behind with his mortal enemy, Barbossa.
Perhaps Elizabeth didn’t have all the information, but she did leave Jack behind just as much as Will did. It’s a sort of trend that will continue throughout the Pirates series.
8 Accepting Norrington’s Proposal
Fans may have always wanted Elizabeth and Will to end up together, but James Norrington wasn’t really a bad guy. He was a bit stuck on the rules, and a bit stiff, but he wasn’t a villain, and he really did care for Elizabeth.
It was wrong of her to play with his feelings and use him. She only accepted his proposal so that he would go and try and rescue Will from the Isla de Muerta. It’s not right to play with someone’s emotions that way.
7 Ignores Will As They Grow Up
Despite having spotted Will through the mist on her crossing from England, despite having helped to rescue him when they were both children, she did keep her distance while they grew up in Port Royal.
One would have thought an independent girl like Elizabeth might have snuck off to see her blacksmith a bit more often, rather than leaving him with no family and only a drunken master to apprentice to. It takes her quite a while to get over their class distinctions and the control of her father.
6 Starts Drinking Rum
Elizabeth is very against rum in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. She is always harassing Jack about his drink habits and (wisely) uses up all the rum when she and Jack are exiled to start a signal fire.
One would think she’d be able to withstand the peer pressure of the other pirates as the series continues, but she doesn’t. She drink rum like the rest of them (though perhaps not in the same volume).
5 Steals Will’s Necklace
When Elizabeth spots Will in the ocean and has him rescued as she crosses the Atlantic, she also steals the medallion around his neck. She does so, she claims because she didn’t want anyone to think he was a pirate and toss him back in the sea.
But, the fact is, she never questions him about the medallion as they grow up, nor does she return it. That’s stealing, robbery, and definitely clues fans in as to how Elizabeth will certainly be able to rise as a pirate.
4 Ruins Norrington’s Life
Using a promise of marriage to Norrington to get him to go after Will in Curse of the Black Pearl is bad enough, but Elizabeth keeps ruining Norrington’s life. She led him on, she left him, she kept getting him involved with Jack, as he loses his position in the Navy and is hired by Jack in Dead Man’s Chest.
If Norrington hadn’t followed his heart and if Elizabeth hadn’t made it seem like he had a chance, perhaps he would have been okay. But Norrington is ruined. He never marries, he never really regains his honor (stealing and trading his way back into the Navy) and then he dies.
3 Kissing Jack
In Dead Man’s Chest, Elizabeth kisses Jack Sparrow while they are fighting for their lives. Of course, it ends up she only did this to save the lives of the rest of the crew, but it was still cruel.
She tricked both the men in her life with one action. Jack is set to die, and Will thinks that Elizabeth is in love with someone else. It may have been for the greater good, but it was not a great look for Miss Swann.
2 Killing Jack
By kissing Jack, Elizabeth was really using the distraction to handcuff him to the mast so the Kraken will eat the ship (and Jack) so the rest of the crew can escape. The Kraken was really only ever interested in Jack. But, it’s still murder, as well-intentioned as it is.
And, it’s Jack Sparrow after all, it’s a tough loss for pirates and audiences alike. It’s so rough that Elizabeth even feels guilty about it.
1 Letting Jack Hang
Even worse than handcuffing Jack to a sinking ship was at the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. At the very end of the film Jack is set to hang in Port Royal. Elizabeth is there to watch with her father, Governor Swann, James Norrington, and quite a few of the port’s residence.
Will, luckily, shows up to help Jack escape and Elizabeth does faint to assist in the adventure, but if Will hadn’t show up, she was prepared to just watch Jack swing.
