Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 Reasons The Franchise Deserves Another Chance (& 5 Why Disney Should Let It Die)

In the mid-to-late 2000s, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was on top of the world. The first movie, The Curse of the Black Pearl, wasn’t expected to be any good because it was based on a theme park ride. But it turned out to be a lot of fun, surprising moviegoers everywhere.

However, as the series went on, the critical response got more and more negative until eventually, it was in the same sordid league as Transformers. So, here are five reasons why the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise deserves to be given another shot, and five why Disney should just let it die.

10 DESERVES ANOTHER CHANCE: Pirate Movies Are Really Fun

On a conceptual level, the Pirates of the Caribbean films are just a modern, big-budget response to classic swashbuckler movies like Captain Blood, Treasure Island, and The Crimson Pirate. Those movies are a lot of fun, and no one’s making pirate movies anymore.

There is a ton of potential for a fun moviegoing experience in Disney writing a $200 million check for a pirate adventure movie, just as long as it doesn’t fall into the pitfalls of focusing on nonsense like zombies and sea monsters and Jack Sparrow talking to hallucinations of himself.

9 LET IT DIE: The Public Has Turned On Johnny Depp

Due to some unfortunate allegations that have come out against Johnny Depp in the last couple of years as he goes through ugly divorce proceedings with Amber Heard, public opinion of the actor has soured.

Depp has been carrying the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise on his shoulders since 2003, so the fact that the public has turned on him is a pretty clear indication that the Pirates movies need to stop.

8 DESERVES ANOTHER CHANCE: The Franchise Could Thrive Without Jack Sparrow

A huge part of why the Pirates of the Caribbean movies declined over the years is that the charm of Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow schtick wore off. Channeling the flamboyance and theatricality of Keith Richards’ on-stage persona made for a fun character in the first couple of Pirates movies, but it got old quickly.

If Disney cuts ties with Depp, and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies stop being beholden to Jack Sparrow, then the franchise might be able to thrive.

7 LET IT DIE: The Story Has Been Dragged Down By Supernatural Elements

The fun of the first Pirates movie was that it was a swashbuckling adventure on the high seas. That’s why it’s a shame that the subsequent movies got more and more bogged down in supernatural elements like curses and the undead and magical MacGuffins.

Making a great Pirates movie today would require stripping away the convoluted mythology and dropping all the paranormal aspects to just make a straightforward swashbuckler movie. But if a writer was going to do that, then they might as well just write an original pirate movie and start their own franchise.

6 DESERVES ANOTHER CHANCE: The Old Cast Could Be Reunited

If X-Men: Days of Future Past proved anything, it’s that a franchise in need of improvement can benefit from bringing back fan-favorite cast members that have been missing for a while. In Pirates of the Caribbean’s case, that would be Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann.

It was fun to see Will and Elizabeth in Dead Men Tell No Tales, but they only appeared very briefly, and they had nothing to do with the main storyline involving Jack. If they’re going to do a reunion, they should do a real reunion.

5 LET IT DIE: Each Sequel Has Been Worse Than The Last

The Rotten Tomatoes score and Metacritic rating of each Pirates of the Caribbean movie has been consistently lower than the last. Those sites don’t offer a definitive metric for judging movies, but this does give an indication of the franchise’s downward trajectory. The Curse of the Black Pearl started things off on the right foot with a fun adventure filled with spectacular action set pieces and comic relief that landed.

However, as the series went on, each movie captured less and less of that magic. The most recent entry, Dead Men Tell No Tales, was the cinematic equivalent of incoherent drivel.

4 DESERVES ANOTHER CHANCE: Gore Verbinski Had An Interesting Vision For The Franchise

The Pirates franchise started to go downhill when Disney got rid of Gore Verbinski. His initial trilogy was easily the strongest run in the series.

Currently, Joachim Rønning is slated to return to helm the series’ sixth installment, but he already proved he makes subpar Pirates movies with Dead Men Tell No Tales.

3 LET IT DIE: The Zeitgeist Has Moved On

A big mistake that studios make is assuming that a franchise that was once popular will always be popular. The Pirates movies once dominated the conversation surrounding blockbusters. In 2007, the most popular movie characters were a disparate group including Jack Sparrow, Shrek, Optimus Prime, Jason Bourne, and Barry B. Benson.

However, in 2008, the moviegoing world was introduced to Tony Stark, and the face of cinema was changed. Now, superheroes rule the box office. By contrast, the Pirates franchise is a dinosaur that Disney refuses to allow to go extinct.

2 DESERVES ANOTHER CHANCE: Disney’s President Of Production Agrees That The Pirates Movies Could Be Better

Talking about a potential sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Disney’s president of production Sean Bailey said, “We want to bring in a new energy and vitality. I love the [Pirates] movies, but…we want to give it a kick in the pants.”

It’s not easy for a high-ranking executive to admit that one of the franchises owned by the studio they work for needs a kick in the pants. The fact that Bailey said that is a promising sign for the Pirates franchise’s future.

1 LET IT DIE: Disney’s Had Enough Chances

After the first couple of movies got the franchise off to a strong start, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End joined the pantheon of disappointing threequels with a bloated plot, cringeworthy humor, and bucketloads of unnecessary exposition. After that movie, Pirates fans gave Disney one more chance with On Stranger Tides.

Then, when that disappointed, they gave Disney another chance with Dead Men Tell No Tales. And that was even more disappointing. At a certain point, Disney’s had enough chances to give this franchise a kick in the pants, and they’ve blown them all.
