A miniseries titled The Plague Year is currently in development at A+E Studios for the History Channel and will be about the bubonic plague during the 17th-century in London. Vikings show creator Michael Hirst will be executive producing with Rectify and Brave New World writer Coleman Herbert penning the script. Hirst will have his hands full between this short-run show and him also running point on the Vikings sequel Valhalla for Netflix.
According to THR, The Plague Year will only be a few episodes due to the History Channel’s recent shift away from long-run scripted television shows and their interest in creating quality short-run scripted content that bolsters their documentary efforts.
While there are a few plague films, like Black Death and the underrated horror film It Comes at Night, there aren’t many television shows about it. It was an interesting time for the human experience that is only briefly read about in school but never seen depicted on the screen quite as often. Having Hirst running point on this show will guarantee historical accuracy like what was seen on Vikings, delivering again what fans love about his work.
The synopsis for The Plague Year reads: “The Plague Year is set in London in 1665, during one of the all-time worst outbreaks of the bubonic plague. It will profile a society in turmoil that finds Londoners leaving the city in droves, while those who remain (whether by choice or not) have their resolve tested and try to keep going as things fall to pieces.”
