Sandlot TV Show In The Works For Disney From Original Film’s Director

The Sandlot is getting its own TV show on Disney+ with the original film’s director returning. Released in 1993, The Sandlot was a coming of age story about a group of kids with a love for baseball. While the film was released in the ’90s, the events of the film took place in the summer of 1962.

The Sandlot has become a cult classic over the years, with the popularity of the movie never seeming to go away. Two direct to video sequels called The Sandlot 2 and The Sandlot: Heading Home came out in 2005 and 2007 respectively, but like most direct to video movies, they weren’t as well received as the original film. Last year it was announced that The Sandlot was getting a prequel film, but it was also revealed last month that The Sandlot was also getting a sequel TV series. Not much is known about the prequel film at this point, but some new information has come to light on the TV show.

According to Variety, Disney+ will be developing The Sandlot series, with director David Mickey Evans returning to write and produce the show. When the series was revealed last month, it was believed that many of the actors from the first film would make a comeback for the sequel series, which is still believed to be the case at this point. That being said, it was also previously revealed that this TV show would take place in 1984 and focus more on the children of the original characters.

While The Sandlot is one example of a new show coming to Disney+, the House of Mouse has several other projects planned. Disney is developing several Star Wars TV shows, such as the highly anticipated The Mandalorian and the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel series starring Diego Luna. Disney has also made plans to create Marvel TV shows such as the Falcon and Winter Soldier series, as well as a series focusing on Scarlet Witch and Vision. On top of the original content, Disney is also planning on bringing all Pixar, Star Wars, and most Marvel movies to their new streaming service.

Fans have been waiting for a true sequel to The Sandlot for years, especially since the direct to video sequels received such negative reviews. While this news doesn’t reveal anything new about the plot of the show, having the series come to Disney+ is an intriguing revelation since The Sandlot was originally distributed by 20th Century Fox (which Disney of course recently acquired). With The Sandlot TV show landing at Disney+, fans are no doubt wondering what Disney has planned for other popular franchises. Needless to say, Star Wars and Marvel movies have been heavy hitters for Disney in recent years, but a TV series that revisits the characters from The Sandlot has a lot of prospect as well given the original film’s fanbase.
