Sony has reversed course on its recent PlayStation digital storefront decision; the PSP digital store is still scheduled to go offline this summer, but the PS3 and PS Vita stores will remain available. After a week of rumors, Sony officially unveiled plans to close the PSP, PS3, and Vita storefronts late last month.

The publisher received a wave of backlash in the lead up to and after the announcement, especially since several indie developers were working on PS Vita titles they had to cancel as a result of the store closure. Arguably, the timing served as the most devastating part of the news. Not only were developers not given a head’s up, but Sony confirmed all three stores would shutter by year’s end. Thus, players have flocked to these digital platforms to take advantage of purchases, particularly for titles that are only accessible on one of these three devices. Fortunately, it seems the corporation has been listening carefully to the outcry of PlayStation fans.

In a PlayStation Blog post today, SIE CEO and President Jim Ryan said that, “upon further reflection,” Sony realized the store closures were not the right move. In turn, the group has decided to keep the PS3 and PS Vita stores operational. Commerce on the PSP, however, is still slated to cease in a few months on July 2, 2021, Ryan revealed. The executive also explained how such a decision originally came to pass. As previously guessed by many a pundit and fan, the store closures stemmed from “commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on.” It’s the passion from fans who wish to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita that inspired the corporation to reverse course.

This good news shows Sony does indeed listen to feedback, something that fans have continued to question over the last several weeks. There are still a few lingering questions that need answers, though. Chief among them is how long PS3 and PS Vita stores will remain online. And how will Sony and its partners tackle resolving issues for PS3 titles that can no longer download patches?

Hopefully, such a reversal also serves as a sign that PlayStation executives will further the brand’s backward compatibility efforts in the future. As of now, a sizable number of PlayStation’s most beloved legacy titles remain stranded on older platforms.
