Pokémon is one of the most successful and profitable properties of all time. The franchise absolutely dominates the video game industry and it’s as popular now as it was upon its initial release, but Pokémon has also branched out into other avenues where it’s found audiences that are just as large. Pokémon Adventures stays fresh with not just the addition of new Pokémon, but also the many trainers that it focuses on. Yellow is one of the trainers that enters Pokémon Adventures early on, but there’s still a lot about the character that people completely miss.

10 She’s One Of Only Two Main Characters That Are Original To The Manga

There are so many Pokémon video games that the manga has a wide net of characters to pull from for the manga’s dominant trainers. The majority of these characters all have video game equivalents, but Yellow is a rare scenario where she and Emerald are the only two new trainers that are created for the Pokémon Adventures manga. In some ways this causes the manga to work harder to flesh out Yellow’s character since she doesn’t have a video game to fall back on. It’s also part of the reason that Yellow has grown into such a popular manga character.

9 She Has Limited Telekinetic And Psychic Abilities

Yellow is a Pokémon Adventures character that really stands out among the crowd and has one of the stronger personalities, especially during the manga’s start. Yellow has exceptional skills on the battlefield, but she’s also uniquely blessed with psychic and telekinetic powers. Yellow is able to read the minds and emotions of Pokémon, as well as telepathically communicate with them, which is a big deal. Additionally, Yellow has exhibited minor telekinetic skills, like the movement of a Poké Ball, but it’s a talent that can be further refined.

8 She Originally Had A Different Name

The names of the characters in Pokémon Adventures aren’t exactly the most creative and the trainers are all named after the different Pokémon titles. Yellow’s name doesn’t seem any different, but the character’s name actually took some creative liberties during VIZ’s original run of the manga.

Yellow’s name was first Amarillo del Bosque Verde before it then becomes Yellow of Viridian Forest, in a nod to her place of birth. VIZ intentionally chose Yellow’s Spanish translation name for stylistic purposes, but the confusion led to them switching back to something that doesn’t veer from the norm.

7 She Acquires 7 Pokémon

Yellow sticks around through many arcs within the Pokémon Adventures manga, but she’s only seen acquiring seven Pokémon—eight if Graveler’s evolved form, Golem, is included. This isn’t a huge roster of Pokémon, but Yellow proves that she’s the type to develop loyal bonds and stick to them. She’s so committed to strategies where her Pokémon take zero damage that the Pokémon in her party almost become irrelevant. It’s also worth pointing out that Yellow clarifies that she’s captured and released plenty of Pokémon before she’s introduced in the manga, so in reality her total is actually much higher.

6 Her Iconic Straw Hat Appears In The Gold & Silver Anime

It’s been quite interesting to witness how the Pokémon video games, anime, and manga all cover distinct territory, but still contain a fair bit of crossover. The anime’s protagonist, Ash, isn’t in Pokémon Adventures, but Red is a close approximation. Yellow doesn’t show up in the Pokémon anime, which is disappointing, but there’s a sly reference to her for astute viewers during Pokémon the Series: Gold and Silver. Ash temporarily wears Yellow’s signature straw hat in the episode “Ties That Bind.” It’s not a major detail, but it’s still nice to see Yellow get some kind of anime acknowledgement.

5 She Can Synchronize Her Pokémon’s Spirits

A lot of the protagonists in the Pokémon video games more or less feel interchangeable and it’s what the player puts into them that really form their personalities. Pokémon Adventures strives for distinct central trainers and it largely succeeds with its approach to its main characters.

Yellow is psychically blessed in various ways, but an extension of this allows her to synchronize the spirits of her Pokémon, which allows them all to communally boost their power level into their 80s. It’s an incredibly helpful tactic where Yellow doesn’t just push her Pokémon further, but also helps them work together.

4 Her Pikachu Mates With Red’s To Produce A Pokémon For Gold

Yellow is meant to draw parallels to Pokémon Yellow, where the protagonist’s Pokémon companion is Pikachu. In Pokémon Adventures, it’s Yellow that’s more the Pikachu champion than Red, who still possesses a Pikachu, but he’s not used in the same way that Ash does in the anime. Yellow looks after Red’s Pikachu, Pika, after the trainer disappears. Pika develops an affinity for Yellow’s own Pikachu, Chuchu, and the two lay a Pokémon Egg together, which later hatches into a Pichu. Pichu is given to Gold and it continues the circle of life from the original trainers onto the next generation.

3 She Has Red’s Original Pokédex

Something that the Pokémon Adventures manga handles particularly well is how it passes the torch between different generations of trainers, a well as the stretches of the story where it juggles many of these characters all at once. Red gifts his original Pokédex over to Yellow, which is quite a symbolic gesture. Since Blue and Green’s original Pokédexes both break, this means that Yellow has the oldest Pokédex in the manga. Consequently, Yellow’s also the main character who goes the longest without a Pokédex, since she doesn’t receive the technology until the FireRed & LeafGreen material.

2 She’s 15 Years Old

Characters’ ages are more benign in the Pokémon anime considering that it’s been on for more than a decade and Ash ostensibly remains the same age. Pokémon Adventures tries to be more careful when it comes to character development. Yellow gets introduced at the manga’s beginning and shortly after she reveals that she’s 15 years old. Yellow’s age is important since her juvenile attitude has many people assume that she’s younger than she actually is, which is a struggle for her. Yellow is also only 4’10” and 85 lbs, so her tiny size also contributes to this misconception.

1 She Has The Ability To Heal Pokémon

One of the most fascinating things about Yellow is that she’s not just a Pokémon trainer, but she also carries the ability to heal others, which feels like it’s a byproduct of Yellow’s psychic abilities. Yellow heals her Pokémon and attempts to keep them in perpetual states of perfect health. This is extremely advantageous and Yellow becomes known for her restorative skill just as much as she does for her Pokémon. The manga restricts Yellow’s healer skills to Pokémon, but there’s a 20th-anniversary calendar that shows Yellow heal another human, which raises some major questions.
