Following the announcement of the next Pokémon games, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, one fan decided to make a brand new trailer highlighting their preferred graphical style for the game. The distinctive chibi aesthetic that the actual remakes are using has drawn a lot of response, both positive and negative.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl are the next in the Pokémon main series, as remakes of the fourth generation Pokémon games Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl. These games take place in the Sinnoh region, where players travel across the map with their Pokémon becoming the Pokémon Champion of the Sinnoh region. Along the way, the main character battles an evil group, intent on using legendary Pokémon for their own desires and putting the whole region at risk.

While fans were less than thrilled with the first impression of the fourth-gen remakes, one fan decided to go ahead and create what they believe the design of the games should be. The fan-made trailer by Milleniumloops took over a week to make, which is very impressive considering how polished and varied the amount of footage shown is. The fan-made trailer depicts a more cell-shaded art style, with a full-bodied main character instead of the smaller design in the official remakes. Millenniumloops even included fully animated Pokémon in the wild and creatures following the main protagonist, a feature fans have been asking for since it was included in Pokémon Heart Gold and Soul Silver. These animated Pokémon and humans even seem to have lighting effects, with shadows casting across the characters on screen. They even bring back Mega Evolution, a mechanic briefly used in the third generation remakes and Pokémon X and Y.

So here it is, after watching the Official remakes of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl I spent the week doing this and reimagine the trailer to how I would have wanted them to be. This is not an actual game. This is a game concept.https://t.co/f9trQu1uyl pic.twitter.com/PHVbCmvfA4

The style depicted in the trailer made by Milleniumloops looks more like the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a game released by Nintendo in 2017. The colors and environments are vibrant, filled with depth and variety. The creator mentioned in another tweet that this trailer was more in line with what they wished the fourth generation remakes would be, instead of the faithful recreation being made by ILCA. It’s clear that fans were looking for a re-imagining of the series which took full advantage of the current generation of technology, as opposed to just a re-release of the original games, which is what Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl appear to be.

The official trailer for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl shows how the series has doubled down on the chibi look of the DS games, where the player and the NPCs around them are represented by tiny sprites. This was originally due to the graphical limitations of the Nintendo DS, whereas the latest Pokémon games on the Nintendo Switch have evolved to a more 3D style, as evident in the Pokémon Legends: Arceus trailer recently released.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl are set to release in late 2021 on the Nintendo Switch.
