Further speculation that the rumored Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remakes are on the way has been sparked by designs for new Pokémon merchandise online, which prominently feature Pokémon that debuted in the Sinnoh region. This has turned heads, as The Pokémon Company will want to heavily promote the most iconic creatures from that generation on the lead-up to the hypothetical remasters’ release.

The fourth generation Pokémon games seem to be next in line for the remake treatment, as Gen III received remakes on the 3DS with Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire in 2014. The Pokémon Company seems to be restricting one remake generation to a console, with Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen appearing on Game Boy Advance, and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver appearing on the Nintendo DS. Pokémon Diamond and Pearl are some of the most beloved entries in the series, and they weren’t outsold by any modern Pokémon games until Pokémon Sword & Shield broke 20 million copies this year. Fans have been clamoring for a return to Sinnoh for a long time, and rumors are circulating that 2021 might be the year that it will happen.

There have been hints that Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remakes are in development, and a new one has appeared in the form of upcoming merchandise. Paul Ryan, webmaster of Pokéshopper, posted an image of upcoming Pokémon notebooks, which feature covers depicting different Pokémon. There are several Pokémon that debuted in the Sinnoh games appearing on the covers, including Riolu, Lucario, Turtwig, Chimchar, Piplup, Munchlax, Pachirisu, Leafeon, and Glaceon. This has led to speculation that these Pokémon are being promoted due to upcoming Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remakes coming to the Switch, as they will be prominently featured in the games.

It should be mentioned that fans have misinterpreted hints like these in the past. The abundance of Pokémon Gold and Silver Pokémon in one of the Pokémon Direct videos led to speculation that Let’s Go! games set in the Johto region were about to be announced. The next Pokémon Direct was actually about Pokémon Unite, which quickly earned over one hundred thousand dislikes on YouTube. This was partly due to The Pokémon Company promising a big announcement, and setting the wrong expectations.

Pokémon Sword and Shield have seen incredible sales figures on the Switch, and a return to the Sinnoh region in the future seems likely. The best time for an announcement will be on Pokémon Day, which falls on February 27. If there are no Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remake announcements on Pokémon Day, then fans might have to wait a few more years until they can have their long-awaited rematch with Cynthia.
