Pokémon Duel Shuts Down This October

Mobile Pokémon game Pokémon Duel is shutting down this October. Since launch, the game has been reviewed by more than 11,000 people on the iTunes store and almost 450,000 on the Google Play store.

Pokémon Duel released in Japan in April 2016, later coming to the rest of the world in January 2017. A digital board game based on the defunct Pokémon Trading Figure Game, Pokémon Duel tasks players with battling in 6v6 Pokémon duels, with Pokémon represented by digital figurines. One of the Pokémon franchise’s more ambitious forays into mobile gaming, Pokémon Duel released after both Pokémon Shuffle Mobile and the wildly successful Pokémon GO. It was recently learned that Pokemon GO is more successful than both Candy Crush and Clash Royale, two mobile games widely recognized as mega-popular in their own right. The Pokémon Company recently announced a handful of additional mobile games, including a Pokémon game that rewards players for sleeping, a new entry in the Pokémon Rumble series and the 3v3 battle game Pokémon Masters.

Pokémon Duel publisher The Pokémon Company announced the game’s termination on the game’s digital store pages. According to the announcement, Pokémon Duel services will be terminated on October 31, 2019. An in-game message further clarified the details of the termination, explaining that players will not be able to install or update the game once the service has ended, and players who already have the app will not be able to continue using it, “barring certain functions.”

As a free-to-play game, Pokémon Duel has relied heavily on microtransactions to make revenue, allowing players to purchase new figures with the in-game “gem” currency in randomized booster packs. According to SensorTower, Pokémon Duel has made approximately $70,000 since launch – a paltry sum compared to Pokémon GO’s $23 million. The Pokémon Company did not say why the service is being terminated, but the game’s comparatively low earnings could be the reason. Because of the end of the game’s services, the company has stopped selling paid items as of today, though players will be able to spend any gems they’ve already purchased. The developers are also making figures available for free, depending on players’ history with the game. If players have spent any money on the game, they’ll be able to obtain 50 figures from the game’s lineup for free. Additionally, Pokémon Duel’s developers have adjusted many of the game’s systems – such as increasing the amount of materials obtained through booster packs and reducing the wait time to open timed booster packs – for the end of the game’s life.

The Pokémon Duel shutdown is a reminder of the risk of spending money on digital game microtransactions. Players who sunk tens or hundreds of dollars into the game will now have nothing to show for it, as it seems the game will be unplayable once the termination goes into effect. The company is reportedly offering refunds for certain unused consumable items, but players who bought figures and the like will not receive any money back, despite essentially no longer owning those items. There’s a reason games such Pokémon Duel are referred to as “games as services,” since purchases are less about ownership and more about use.
